He is sending a 'leaf of the Leeds Mercury containing a review of your Life of your father, which is good & appreciative', along with a copy of one of his sermons (neither enclosure present). Not having yet seen the book, he asks if he 'put in the extraordinary prophecy which your father made in March or April 1892 of the numbers of members who were to be elected in the July of that year?' He has 'the letter he wrote to Fanny with the exact number', and wishes he had reminded him of that fact before. A final paragraph discusses personal news.

In den Warenkorb12mo, 4 pp. 40 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Spencer'. He is sorry to have missed Childers: 'I came back early on Sat: morning fairly driven home by the weather.' Reports that 'Better reviews of the book are now appearing Athenaeum - evidently by Dilke: Tablet: Pall Mall &c.' Thinks 'Clarke will use his influence with the Times', the idea that 'King' has done so being 'entirely out of the question'. He does not 'suppose there is a word of truth in that paragraph in Modern Society', a paper about which he knows nothing: 'from its print & style it seems pretty low'. 'If such a statement had appeared in any reputable quarter, it might have been worth while writing to say that the Queen had given full permission - but I wd not condescend to correct "Modern Society".' The rest of the letter refers to a visit by 'Jack' (his son John Murray V) to 'Hugh' and 'Dorothy'.

At the time of writing the biography of the Liberal politician Hugh Culling Eardley Childers (1827-1896) by his son Col. Edmund Spencer Eardley Childers (1854-1919) had just been published, and Welby begins by thanking the Colonel for the gift of the book. 'You may depend on it that there is no one that will value it more than myself - both from my long friendship & connection with him, & emphatically from my high appreciation of his admirable work as a Minister of the Crown in the Public Service [.] Alas how the ideas which Parliament and the Country when he was in his prime have passed away.' It was Childers' efforts which 'really made our relations with the great Colonies what they are. | The critical independence which they granted was a great policy for the Empire & the race, far different from the tinkering views of those who want to sow the seeds of discussion in the Empire by Imperial tariffs & tommy rot of that kind.'.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 4to. 58 lines. Good, on lightly-aged and creased paper. E. S. E. Childers' biography of his father had appeared earlier in the year, and his brother writes to tell him that the American booksellers 'have not yet received the copies (3) of the "Life" which I ordered on first hearing it was published'. He is ordering a further six, and will send copies 'to some of the leading papers for review, including 1 each to Dean Hodges and Mr Robt Woods of Boston for review in the "Churchman" and Boston "Transcript"'. He wishes to give copies to friends, but hopes that the London publisher Murray will reimburse him for the review copies, feeling that the 'references to America will make very interesting quotations for the papers here to use'. He praises his brother's work highly: 'I can only say again that the book shows most admirable good taste in its preparation in every way - the summing up of mother's as well as father's character &c. could not be improved upon - the former has touched me very much.' He describes two errors before turning to family news.

In den WarenkorbAll three items good, on lightly-aged paper. All bifoliums. Letter One (1 July 1901): 12mo, 4 pp. 42 lines. He is pleased to have received Childers' life of his father (published that year). 'I knew your Father well, [.] I was in the House in the Parliaments of 68 & 80 when he had his most serious work'. Praises his 'amazing pluck in going out as he did to Australia [Childers was first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne] & in his conduct there in the early days & during the gold discoveries time, the story of which in his letters is very curious'. He is interested to learn that he 'had Jewish blood in his veins'. He finds it 'evident that he was very doubtful as to Gladstone's wisdom on several points & in that I agree with him'. He believes that, though 'most anxious to help Ireland', he was not 'really happy about Home Rule', wanting to 'separate the Imperial from the Local', which 'could not be done'. Ends: 'Where should we have been in 99, if we had given Ireland over to an Irish Parlmt in 93?' Letter Two (4 July 1901): 12mo, 4 pp. 33 lines. Having received Childers' reply, he is pleased he wrote. Childers' 'Jewish blood' is 'very interesting to me'. Praises Disraeli's comments on the subject in his biography of Lord George Bentinck - 'a most interesting book & written by a most remarkable specimen of that famous nation'. Attacks Gladstone's handling of the Home Rule question. The recipient is 'right that Gladstone acted in a hurry [.] but he did more - He broke faith with his old friends to whom in Septr 1885 he sent a message utterly opposed to the plans which he developed, even before the Election of that year. He was not straight & he had his reward. And he destroyed the Liberal party. - Where is it now?' Letter Three (8 July 1901): 12mo, 3 pp. 31 lines. He thanks him for 'the Copy of that very remarkable letter - It does the Father credit'. Until the recent case of 'Mr J. E. Backhouse of Darlington' he had 'never heard before of a boy being made a Baronet'. He does not 'altogether agree with your history as to 79-80 - I remember well saying after that terrible Afghan disaster, at end of 79, that it would finish the Govmt - that & the Zulu war were too much for the Electors.'.

In 1851 he was appointed inspector of Denominational schools, commissioner of National schools, and immigration agent. The following year he became a director of the Melbourne, Mount Alexander and Murray River Railway Company, was appointed auditor-general, and nominated to the Legislative Council, playing a key part in drafting the constitution bill for the Colony of Victoria. In 1856 Childers won the seat of Portland in the Legislative Assembly. Between 1853 and 1857 he also served as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. In 1858 he returned to England permanently, where he entered politics. He represented Pontefract in the House of Commons from 1860-1885 and Edinburgh South from 1886-1892. Throughout his political career he continued to promote Australian interests and ideas, campaigning against transportation to Western Australia, lobbying for the adoption of the Australian ballot system, persuading the British Government to provide the Colony of Victoria with a warship in 1866, and representing Victoria as agent-general and as a commissioner at the London International Exhibition of 1872.
