Auch diese Hamburger Ausstellung ist, obwohl aus Zeichnungen -und Gemälden bestehend, die man diesem Genre gewöhnlich nicht zurechnet, als eine Installation zu verstehen. Kaum hatte er den Kuppelsaal betreten, den er bis dahin nur aus Plänen kannte, beherrschte ihn die Vorstellung, der Pantheon-Charakter müsse durch vier Bild-»Pfeiler« - aufgegriffen und um einer inszenatorischen Grundstruktur der Ausstellung willen modifiziert werden. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Zeichnungen aus sechzehn Jahren, Zeichnungen, die für Enzo Cucchi den Kern seines Werks bilden. Er hat sie einmal mit der memoria in Verbindung gebracht, der Erinnerung an frühe Wesen, Formen, Mythen. Diese in den Zeichnungen lebhaft werdende Erinnerung stößt unablässig an akute Abgründe der Existenz - wie bei jenen Künstlern, welche dem in Rom lebenden Cucchi aus dem Norden, von fern her, mal insgeheim und mal offen zusprechen: Edvard Munch, Victor Hugo, Odilon Redon, Alfred Kubin. Sie sind es auch, die mit ihm den Alptraum und die Vision gemeinsam haben. Die durchgehend schwarzweiße Wiedergabe der Zeichnungen Cucchis in zahlreichen Publikationen scheint mittlerweile einen düster-grauen Schleier übers Werk gelegt zu haben. Mit unserer Ausstellung und mit den farbigen Wiedergaben der Werke in diesem Katalog wollen wir einen neuen Blick aufdie Sprache des Zeichen- und des Zeichnungsmaterials bei Cucchi lenken. Danken möchten wir den Leihgebern für ihr großzügiges Entgegenkommen. Mit rasch freundschaftlicher Zuneigung hat Enzo Cucchi unser Vorhaben unterstützt, neueste Werke zur Premiere nach Hamburg gegeben und uns die typographische Fassung eines neuen Textes zum Abdruck überlassen, der ebenfalls als Werk betrachtet werden will.
