Zustand: New.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'This spellbinding collection of stories by one of Eastern Europe's most visionary authors vividly depicts the darkest impulses of the human psyche and the irrationality lurking just beneath the surface of a seemingly rational society teetering on the verge of the abyss. Set against the backdrop of a Europe descending into the chaos of World War I, Csâath's stories possess clarity, insight, and at times are remarkable for their shock-value. They are unsettling and gothic, surreal and dreamlike, and each in its own way pierces the veil of normality to reveal a truth to which Csâath himself ultimately succumbed'--Inside front cover.

In den WarenkorbLeinen. Zustand: Wie neu. Erste Auflage. 143 S. Tadelloses Exemplar. Erstausgabe
stiff wraps. 1st UK Edition. 1st UK edition, octavo, illustrated wraps, b&w illus, pp 206. Some creasing to covers, marking/darkening to upper rear cover. Pages toned, otherwise clean. Good condition. Géza Csáth (1887 - 1919) was a Hungarian writer, physician, psychiatyist, and opium addict. In her introduction, Angela Carter descibes the circumstances of his short life as "those of a child in the death throes of an empire", and his dark stories reflect his unhappy life. The illustrations are taken from Attila Sassy's volume Opium-almok (Opium Dreams), published in 1909, which are very Beardsley in style and were condemned as obscene at the time. This is the first UK edition of the first translation into English (published in the US as "The Magician's Garden and Other Stories"), and uncommon thus.
