George Cruickshank, John Leech (illustrator). 1842 half leather bound volume, second series.The Legends are a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham.What gives this book some punch are the engarvings (6 full page and several half page) by two of the foremost illustrtators of the period, Cruickshnak and Leech, both of whom worked with Dickens. Interior clean, devoid of inscriptions, marks, tears or folds. Sporadic/occasional age blemishes throughout but all text and plates still legible. All pages tight within binding. Leather has some loss at corners, and rubbed to spine edge and spine top. Still in sound condition for age.

Black and marble end papers are clean to Browning and Milton respectively. Slight offsetting and browning to decorative end papers of Ingoldsby, Hemans and Tennyson, with signs of wear to hinge of front end papers to Tennyson. Internally, firmly bound, with marginal wear to hinge of Browning between pp.338-339. Pages are bright and clean, with minimal age toning, a couple of faint spots to first leaves of Tennyson and Browning, with slight spotting to frontispiece of Tennyson, and offsetting to half-title of Hemans. Very Good. book.

Wells, Henry James, and Rudyard Kipling since its its initial publication in 1837. In a quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. A little rubbed to the boards, with some light rubbing to the spine, joints, and extremities. The front hinge is very tender, and may fail with more handling. The rear hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Good. book.

Thomas Cruickshank's work examines the cultivation, management, and properties of various types of trees native to the British Isles. Cruickshank describes himself as a "Forester at Careston", a small hamlet on the eastern coast of Scotland. He dedicates the work to James Duff, 4th Earl Fife (1776-1857), and notes that his text was "The result of experience chiefly acquired in his Lordship's service" (p. iii). Octavo.
