The troops engaged included regulars from both sides, together with colourful irregular colonists and highly effective African troops. The German commander, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, is fascinating to those interested in these campaigns because he fought imaginatively and ably against the odds, revealing him to be a master of his craft. This book, written by a senior British officer who was present throughout the events described, does not cover the entire East African campaign, though a synopsis of those events is included to add context to the principal narrative. The narrative concentrates instead, specifically on the portion of the campaign that came under the command of Jan Christiaan Smuts, who had proved himself to be a capable Boer commander during the Anglo-Boer War, and as a leader of British forces in the Great War. He also commanded in the Second World War rising to the rank of Field-Marshal. First separate edition, printed following the appearance of Crowe's essay in the Proceedings of the Royal Artillery Institution. A second edition followed two months later and both are rare, WorldCat showing a combined total of four copies. Major, later Brigadier-General, John Henry Verinder Crowe RA (1862-1948) was the chief instructor in military history and topography at Woolwich and then commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada. During the First World War, he commanded the Royal Artillery in German East Africa under Jan Smuts. In this pamphlet, he remarks on the skill with which generals Roberts and Stewart advanced without long supply lines and the systematic use of heliograph signalling in the field for the first time. "The losses we suffered, excepting the disaster at Maiwand, were comparatively insignificant. The operations are known as the Afghan 'war', for want of a better word, but 'punitive expedition' would more correctly describe them" (p. 26). Quarto (220 x 145 mm), pp. 26.
