The legend that he resembled Melchizedek was current long before his death, and all sorts of stories were retailed about him in Oxford and elsewhere; and there is little doubt that he knew about some of these and rather enjoyed them. Rumour had it that as an undergraduate he had stroked the Merton Eight. There are better-founded traditions that he was fond of riding and that he was keen on whist. He was fifty-four when I knew him first, and by that time it would seem that the `trito-Stone' had begun to appear. Once he was asked at a meal: `Is it true, Dr. Stone, that you were seen last July in Oran, sitting outdoors drinking the wine of the country, and smoking a green cigar?' `Not necessarily green,' was the answer. When he settled down to say his thanksgiving, it seemed as if one were transported into eternity.' (from `Some personal memories, by Frederic Hood, p. xvii-xxi) Good lt. spotted orig. violet cloth.
