In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Original Dustjacket. William Croome (illustrator). Early Reprint. R. M. Ballantyne's The Young Fur Traders was among the earliest books specially written for young people and published by Nelson. - William Nelson himself suggested to the author that he draw on his experiences while serving, from age 16 to age 21 (1841 to1847), as a clerk of the Hudson's Bay company on remote Canadian trading stations to write a story suitable for young readers. Ballantyne had literary ambitions - he had already published Hudson's Bay, or Everyday Life in the Wilds of North America privately at first, in 1848, for friends, family, and subscribers, then, in the same year, with Blackwood, who had been one of the subscribers to the privately produced book, and in 1853 he had brought out The Northern Coasts of America and the Hudson's Bay Territories: A Narrative of Discovery and Adventure with Nelson - and he accepted with alacrity. Illustrated by William Croome: William Croome, 1790-1860, was one of a small colony of artists and engravers of book illustrations in the Brandywine Valley of South-eastern Pennsylvania. Croome had been trained in Boston under Abel Bowen and was one of a group of impressive and "raffish" apprentices who went on to fame as engravers and book illustrators. Croome was a mature artist and one of the Republic's most busy, designing banknotes, creating covers for Crockett's Almanacs, and producing illustrations for books. CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The original dustjacket houses this incredible book and is now housed in a removable plastic archival sleeve. Has the price of 3/6 net on the spine and front panel. Paste-On illustration to the front panel. There are repairs to the rear of the dustjacket in brown paper. Cracked at the front margin. Few small closed edge repairs. Overall, fairly nice condition and rare to see on a book of this age. Blue boards with integral illustration to front board and spine. Faded in places with a little soiling. Generally a good condition. Grey end-pages are unevenly browned. There are two signatures on the front grey endpages. First one is E. Catchpole 1923. Second grey endpage states: Dom Lynches Eastbourne 3.12.88. - There is a page that lists the illustrations and someone has penned through some of the page numbers relating to the image as the images appear out of sinc. There are 8 illustrations by Coome and they accompany the story well. There is also occasional foxing. Few small closed edge tears, text is unaffected. Small cellotape repair to top edge of last page. Unusual Signature to the inner front board reads: E. Catchpole / July 23 1923. - BONUS REPORT: I purchased this book as a first print with a signatory of one of the 1866 petitioners for the woman's suffragette petition of 1866. After I bought the book, I did a bit of research to confirm this and found E. Catchpole to be a signatory: She appears on page 6 of the list and she is from Deptford. I have produced an A4 Ring-bound Report consisting of 36 pages with a transparent front cover and a black backing card. First page of the report states: John Stuart Mill MP presented the first mass women's suffrage petition to the House of Commons on 7 June 1866. The petition was brought to Parliament by Emily Davies and Elizabeth Garrett. The story was later told that to avoid attention on arrival in Westminster Hall, they concealed it under the stall of an apple seller, which is where Mill found it.The petition organisers recorded 1499 names, which were printed and circulated in a pamphlet. Mill spoke on the petition on 17 July 1866.A year later, the petition led to the first debate on votes for women. On 20 May 1867 Mill tried to amend the Second Reform Bill to replace the word man with person. He later described this as perhaps the only really important public service I performed in the capacity as a Member of Parliament. The second page of the report has frequently asked questions about the suffrage petition of 1866 and answers provided by numerous specialists. END.
