Hardcover. First Edition. London, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. Ltd. (for Perrier Sparkling Table Water), [circa 1907]. Oblong folio (275 × 380 mm), [28] pages decorated title page featuring the Perrier logo (verso blank), 12 full-page colour plates by Charles Crombie (with a small two-colour Perrier advertisement on the verso of each one), and a full-page colour advertisement for Perrier, with four chromolithographed vignette illustrations (verso blank). Rebacked quarter cloth and original pictorial papered boards, with the hinges neatly reinforced with matching cloth; front cover unevenly discoloured, heavily rubbed around the edges, and moderately worn at the corners (with the rear cover less impacted on all three counts); pastedowns and first and last pages (in contact with them) tanned; minor signs of age and use (including a short tear to the foot of the title leaf sealed with clear tape); overall, a presentable copy, with the plate content in excellent condition. This selection of humorous cartoon illustrations by Charles Crombie (1880-1967), was preceded by 'The Rules of Golf' (1906), also published by Perrier. Provenance: A.J.B. Fowler, with his snipped signature mounted at the head of the title page (possibly placed over an earlier name dated 1907 - the date is still visible). Archibald John Burgess 'Archie' Fowler (1891-1977) was and English first-class cricketer. He 'had many trials for Middlesex as a slow left-armer between 1921 and 1931 and received his County Cap. He never quite made his place secure, but must have been fairly near it in 1924 when he took 5 for 29 against Lancashire, then a very strong side. Later in the mid-thirties he succeeded George Fenner as head coach at Lord's. Those of us who regard Fenner as one of the finest coaches we have ever known realise what it means that Fowler was in his turn regarded as outstanding. He constantly umpired at Lord's and finally for many years acted as scorer, his connection with the ground extending in all for over half a century. He was a Life Member of the Middlesex County Cricket Club' (Wisden Cricketers' Almanack).
