In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Good. The very scarce first edition of this English translation of Ariosto's seven candid satirical verse epistles. Rebound in a full brown cloth for the Lincoln's Inn Library, endpapers renewed. The first edition of this translation of Ariosto's Satires. ESTC No.: T133625. With an engraved medallion portrait of Ariosto by Robert Strange, laid down opposite the title. The translation was principally undertaken by the Reverend Mr. Horton, with the second and seventh satires translated by Temple Henry Croker, who also supplied the introductory life of Ariosto and notes. Composed between 1517 and 1525, Ariosto's seven verse satires take the form of intimate epistles to friends and relations. Strongly autobiographical, they range across the frustrations of court service and patronage, corruption at Rome, marriage, education and worldly ambition. Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533) was an Italian Renaissance poet and dramatist, best remembered as the author of the great chivalric epic Orlando Furioso. A very scarce copy of this English translation of Ariosto's sharp autobiographical satires. Rebound in a full brown cloth for the Lincoln's Inn Library, endpapers renewed. Externally, smart. Ink stamp dating the rebind, 20th November 1953, to the rear free endpaper. Institutional stamp from Lincoln's Inn Library to recto of first renewed blank and verso of title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned with the odd light spot, heavier to first and last few leaves and fore edge. One or two minor handing marks to fore edge. Slight cockling to leaves with the odd light crease to first and final few leaves. Good. None (illustrator). book.…
