His early work on the sand dunes, ponds, streams, and forests bordering Lake Michigan led to the acceptance of animal ecology as a distinct discipline within the biological sciences. Shelford developed the concept of ecological succession of animals, and he was among the first to consider food webs, the intricate interrelationships in feeding habits that ultimately determine species composition and community structure.
