Saggio di Crivelli che riprende alcuni punti dell'opera del 1726 intitolataÂMemoria sulle forze vive, una dissertazione fisico-matematica che si inserisce nella polemica suscitata dal Leibniz mezzo secolo prima quando, allontanandosi dalle concezioni cartesiane, ridefinisce lo stato di moto-quiete dei corpi. Per Leibniz esistono due stati di moto-quiete dei corpi, cui corrispondono rispettivamente una forza viva e una forza morta che fanno si' che un corpo sia o non sia in movimento. Crivelli difende la concezione di Cartesio, rifiutando la distinzione tra forze vive e forze morte, e negando a queste ultime la possibilita' di produrre movimento, ovvero velocita', in un corpo. The second volume of the two-volume "Elements of Physics" by Giovanni Francesco Crivelli (1690-1743), an Italian phycist and mathematician. A very important book in the history of modern Italian physics. Among other topics, this second volume discusses astronomical theories. The second, revised and expanded edition with two theses by the same author: "Sulle leggi del moto, e dell'estimazione delle forze vive" (alternative title: "Dissertazione sopra le leggi del moto") and "I Problemi aritmetici di Diofanto Alessandrino Analiticamente Dimostrati". The volume contains a complete set of 14 fold-out plates with engraved illustrations and diagrams. Antiqua typesetting; the title page features a large vignette (copper engraving). /// Parchment binding with gilt title and marbled edges; hardback, 437 pp., 14 plates, 8° (17.5 x 22.5 cm), parchment worn and yellowed, with a few brown spots and call number written with pen, upper part of original backstrip missing (skilfully fixed by bookbinder), corners slightly bumped and rubbed, slightly starting hinge (small crack between title page and free endpaper), endpapers yellowed and slightly foxed, plates and most pages foxed, some pages browned, other signs of wear and age are very rare (minor creases, small pale stain etc.), condition: good Book Language/s: Italian.

Crivelli (1691-1743) allineò le sue teorie matematiche a Galileo e Cartesio opponendole a quelle di Leibniz.
