Hardback. Zustand: Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. ~Recent binding in quarter dark green calf, hand-marbled paper to boards. Raised bands and red gilt label to spine. Fading to spine and to leather on boards near spine, with band of fading to top boards. Mild splash marks to spine. Folio (24.6 x 37.9 x 7.5cm). Hinges sound, replacement endpapers uncracked at gutters. Bookplate of P. R. Glazebrook, legal scholar, to inside front board. Earlier replacement blank front endleaf with inscription: 'Humphrey Senhouse / 4th September 1826 / The Gift of the Revd Jas. Lowther Senhouse'. This is likely Sir Humphrey Fleming Senhouse (bap. 1781, d. 1841), naval officer, who served served in the Napoleonic Wars, the War of 1812, and the First Anglo-Chinese War. Revd James Lowther Senhouse (d. 1844), rector of Gosforth in Cumbria, was presumably a member of the same prominent Cumberland family. Title page printed in red & black. Decorated initials, woodcut head- and tail-pieces throughout. Some soiling and edgewear to t.p., which has old repairs to top edge and bottom gutter, not affecting text. Waterstain at bottom gutter from t.p. to p. 70, and at top gutter to c. p. 600, most noticeable to early leaves in both cases. Waterstainss to much of pp. 628-29, extending, much more mildly, through subsequent pp. to p. 653. Moderate waterstaining to margins of final pp., from c. p. 979 to end of vol., most noticeable to fore-edges of concluding index. Three small holes to margins of penultimate leaf, very slightly affecting text. Final leaf (of which recto only is printed with final p. of index) has substantial loss, with most of the final column of the index missing; we have supplied an A4 printout from an online edition. Hugh Paulinus Cressy (name in religion Serenus), 1605-1674, Benedictine monk. Cressy was ordained as an Anglican but, disillusioned by the civil war and 'by what he considered the failure of the Church of England' (ODNB), he converted to Catholicism in 1646, was professed as a Benedictine in 1649, and ordained in 1651. Following the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 he became one of Catherine of Braganza's chaplains, remaining active both as a controversialist and as a writer on mystical theology, much influenced by Augustine Baker: he became the first editor of Julian of Norwich's 'XVI Revelations of Divine Love', and 'Baker and Cressy were together largely responsible for the preservation of the early English mystics in English' (ODNB). Cressy's 'Church-History of Brittany' (i.e. Britain) is part of this focus on the deep roots of English Catholicism, written with the intention of 'demonstrating a continued succession of Catholick beleif in our Island' (sig. i1R). An abridgement of the Jesuit Michael Alford's 1663 'Annales Ecclesiae Britannicae', a Latin ecclesiastical history of England, the 'Church-History' is condensed (around half the length of Alford's work) and with occasional additions 'to emphasize the monastic contribution to English ecclesiastical history' (ODNB). Cressy also drew on 'several monuments and books more lately published', including Dugdale's Monasticon and Richard Smith's Flores historiae ecclesiasticae gentis Anglorum, as well as 'several volumes of manuscripts' in Baker's library at Douai, but acknowledges that the 'general fabrick' of the work is Alford's (sig. i2r). This 1668 first edition was published in Rouen (place of publication from ESTC), and the errata page includes a disarming apology for faults arising from 'this Book having been printed in a Countrey where not one of the composers understood the least word of English' (sig. i3v). ESTC R4335; Clancy 258. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 1st edn. Hardback. Size: (xxii), 1002, (17)pp.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good+. ~Recently rebound in quarter brown calf, marbled paper to boards. Black gilt label and gilt ruling to spine. Spine faded. Small 8vo (11.5 x 17.2cm). Hinges sound. Replacement endpapers uncracked at gutters. Bookplate to inside front board. Some soiling and edgewear to title page. Minor dampstaining to base of pp. 1-8. Loss to bottom outer corner of p. 135, with a few words of text affected. Headpieces. Two different settings of this vol. were published in 1672, of which this is the second (originally also published as part of the 1672 'A Collection of Several Treatises in Answer to Dr. Stillingfleet'). No printer or place of publication. Published under the initials 'S. C.', i.e. Serenus Cressy (1605-1674), Benedictine monk, controversialist and historian of English Catholicism. In 1670 Cressy had produced the first edited edition of Julian of Norwich's XVI Revelations of Divine Love; 'Augustine Baker and Cressy were together largely responsible for the preservation of the early English mystics in English and it was this tradition that Cressy defended against the attacks of Edward Stillingfleet in Fanaticism Fanatically Imputed (1672)' (ODNB). Cressy makes particular mention of 'Mother Iuliana' on p. 63, in his defence 'of the life of prayer and contemplation'. Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, responded in Stillingfleet's defence the following year with 'Animadversions Upon a Book, Intituled, Fanaticism Fanatically Imputed to the Catholick Church'. Scarce. {Clancy 265}. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 1st edn 2nd imp. Hardback. Size: (24), 188pp.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. ~FULL TITLES: Roman-Catholick Doctrines No Novelties: Or An Answer to Dr. Pierce's Court-Sermon, Mis-call'd The Primitive Rule of Reformation. By S. C. a Roman-Catholick / An Answer to Doctor Pierce's Sermon Preached before His Majesty at White-Hall Feb. 1. 1662. By J. S. ~Original speckled calf, blind frames to boards. Raised bands to spine. Gilt decor to board edges. Splitting starting over rear hinges, front hinge cracked but holding. Hinges becoming tender, but strings holding. 8vo (11.4 x 17.1cm). All edges red. Inscription to fore-edges: 'Cressy a B+ Pierce(?) 253'. Bookplates to inside front board: Arbury Library and P. R. Glazebrook (legal scholar). Inscription to front flyleaf: 'December . 9 . 1663 / Co. Cs. Fd. (?)'. Typographic head- and tail-pieces. Minor worm damage extending from inside front board through to p. 222, affecting bottom margin only: no impact on text. Moderate age-browning to early pages. Armorial bookplate of Sir Richard Newdigate, dated 1709 (Franks Collection 21722) to verso of title page. This is almost certainly Sir Richard Newdigate, 3rd Baronet (1668-1727), who 'seems to have devoted his time to managing his estates at Arbury and Harefield'; over 40 books with a Newdigate bookplate are now in the Harry Ransom Research Center, University of Texas, including a Shakespeare First Folio (Pearson, Book Owners Online). Sir Richard's father, the 2nd Bart, was known for his 'vehement anti-Catholicism' (Folger, catalogue note to N49649); he and Sir Richard had an fiercely acrimonious relationship, and it is perhaps revealing that the 3rd Bart's library included this volume of Catholic apologia. Published under the initials S. C. (Serenus Cressy, Benedictine controversialist and historian, 1605-1674), and J. S. (Joseph Simons, the pseudonym of Emmanuel Lobb, Jesuit playwright, 1594-1671); the attribution to Lobb is made by Lobb's contemporary Thomas Blount, Wing, and Clancy, although the work has sometimes been assigned to John Sergeant (ODNB). The two works bound together here are both responses to Thomas Pierce's sermon 'The Primitive Rule of Reformation', the most significant of many sermons preached by Pierce during his tenure as chaplain-in-ordinary to the king. Pierce's sermon, an attack on Catholicism, 'ran through eight editions in 1663 alone and was translated into several foreign languages'; it precipitated several important responses by Catholic polemicists, including this one by Cressy, and ignited 'a long-running controversy' (ODNB). Both Cressy and Lobb's responses here include dedications to the Queen Mother; Lobb's dedication includes an acknowledgement of 'the excellent Pen of S. C.', which had already defended 'the no less ancient, then unchangeable truths of our Doctrines' (A2v). The Cressy work is the 'O copy' identified by Clancy, with Ch. 1 beginning 'I cannot forbid myself to wonder that a book so universally esteemed'. The Simons work is 3rd issue, with 'Pierce's' and 'Feb. 1. 1662' on the title-page and no errata on page 121. Clancy 273; 603. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request.
