Publisher's green cloth ornamented in blind; dated circular emblem gilt-stamped in centre of front cover; light wear to ends of spine. A book of nonsense with satirical sketches accompanied by limerick verse published on the occasion of the Great Central Fair for the US Sanitary Commission in 1864 for the relief of northern soldiers. Clearly inspired by the first American printing of Edward Lear's A Book of Nonsense, at Philadelphia the previous year, this book reflects the growing fashion and demand for such literature. A dozen of the compositions are political lampoons, five caricatures treat black subjects (4, 42, 47, 52 & 60). The lithographs are executed by Endicott & Co. Illustrations are variously signed: 'B.', 'D.', 'W.E.Cresson', 'Cresson', 'Mrs. Emlen Cres¬son', 'G.W.Clinton', 'G.W.C.'. Some isolated foxing, a few occasional light traces of usage, but generally a good copy.
