In the Badminton Library series, a sporting project aiming to cover all major sports and pastimes, edited by Henry Somerset.The racing part was written by the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire and W G Craven, while the steeple-chasing part was written by Arthur Coventry and Alfred E T Watson. With a general history and the development of the two sports, and chapters focused on rules, races, betting, and more.Illustrated in text throughout by John Sturgess.A special copy signed Charles Kemeys-Tynte April 1892, Eton College, and A C James. Tynte was a British aristocrat and Justice of the Peace, son of Halswell Milborne Kemeys-Tynte and 8th Baron Wharton JP. Some interesting entries such as 'On Aug 25 1804 Captain William Flint (White) beat Mrs. Thornton riding side saddle in a dress of buffalo leopard colour, blue sleeves and cap over the Knavsmire. Much unpleasantness followed - Col. Thornton applied in the King Bench for a criminal information against Captain Flint for challenging him to a duel and for horsewhipping him on the race ground at York the summer after the match took place.'
