Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Unterschrift / Widmung ohne Bezug; Riss grosser als 1 cm; Deutliche Biegung. Here are more than a hundred wonderful and sensitive duotone portraits of our major novelists, poets, and playwrights. Paired with the photographs are fascinating texts from each writer on writing--thoughts on the craft, recoll…ections of significant moments from their personal history, meditations on the civic importance of writing, and so forth. Some of these photographs are well known--Bellow, Mailer, Cheever, and Capote--and others have never before been published. Many were taken on location, from Muriel Spark in Tuscany and James Baldwin in Provence to Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Mexico City. All are strikingly fresh and authentic. The pithy and idiosyncratic thoughts on writing are a perfect complement to the superb portraits; often words and pictures seem to exist in a magical rapport. For all of us who care about the American literary scene, Nancy Crampton's gift is an intimate look at our literary heroes, our Writers . 104 duotone photographs.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. [10], 611, [3] pages. Maps Illustrations. Notes. Index. Minor edge creases at several back pages. Derek Leebaert is an American technology executive who writes books on history and politics, which evoke insights on leadership. He won the biennial 2020 Truman…Book Award for Grand Improvisation, and he's a founder of the National Museum of the United States Army. Leebaert's book on elite military operations, To Dare and To Conquer has been on various United States Special Operations Command reading lists. It has been required reading in the Q Course at Ft. Bragg as well. To Dare and to Conquer was a Washington Post Book World "Nonfiction Best Book" of 2006, as was his subsequent book, Magic and Mayhem: The Delusions of American Foreign Policy from Korea to Afghanistan, for 2010. His latest book, Grand Improvisation (2018) was a New York Times "Best Book," and reviews are found in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Review of Books, the Times (London), et al. Leebaert also co-authored the MIT Press trilogy on the IT revolution, including The Future of the Electronic Marketplace and The Future of Software. He holds a B.A. from Vanderbilt (history/economics), an M.A. from Columbia University (international affairs), and a D.Phil. in political economy from Oxford University (1983). From 2001-2010, he taught "The Price of U.S. Global Engagement" for Georgetown's Department of Government. He is a founding editor of three enduring periodicals: International Security, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, and The International Economy. A new understanding of the post World War II era, showing what occurred when the British Empire wouldn't step aside for the rising American superpower, with global insights for today. An enduring myth of the twentieth century is that the United States rapidly became a superpower in the years after World War II, when the British Empire, the greatest in history, was too wounded to maintain a global presence. In fact, Derek Leebaert argues in Grand Improvisation, the idea that a traditionally insular United States suddenly transformed itself into the leader of the free world is illusory, as is the notion that the British colossus was compelled to retreat. The United States and the U.K. had a dozen abrasive years until Washington issued a declaration of independence from British influence. Only then did America explicitly assume leadership of the world order just taking shape. Leebaert's character-driven narrative shows such figures as Churchill, Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennan in an entirely new light, while unveiling players of at least equal weight on pivotal events. Little unfolded as historians believe: the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan; the Korean War; America's descent into Vietnam. Instead, we see nonstop U.S. improvisation until America finally lost all caution and embraced obligations worldwide, a burden we bear today. Understanding all of this properly is vital to understanding the rise and fall of superpowers, why we're now skeptical of commitments overseas, how the Middle East plunged into disorder, why Europe is fracturing, what China intends, and the ongoing perils to the U.S. world role. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Jeffrey L. Ward (Maps) and Nancy Crampton (Author (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. [8],248 pages. James P. Carroll (born January 22, 1943, Chicago, Illinois, United States) is an American author, historian, and journalist. He has written extensively about his experiences in the seminary and as a priest, and has published books on religion a…nd history. He won the 1996 National Book Award for Nonfiction for An American Requiem, a memoir about the Vietnam War and his relationships with his father, the American military, and the Catholic Church. He is the author of other books on religion and politics, including House of War, which won the first PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for non-fiction. Mr. Carroll's other works include the novels Secret Father, Prince of Peace, Mortal Friends in addition to plays and a book of poetry published. Carroll's work has received the Melcher Book Award, the James Parks Morton Interfaith Award, and National Jewish Book Award in History, and has frequently been named among the Notable Books of the Year by The New York Times. Derived from a Kirkus review: Carroll is to be applauded for this drama. The novel begins with David Dolan, an early '70s draft-dodger activist, returning to the U.S. after eight years as an academic in Sweden. David's hopes for a job at NYU fall through, so, distraught, he goes looking for his sister-in-law Eddie--widow of his killed-in-Nam brother. Eddie has been having her own problems: her remarriage to movie star Cheney McCoy has gone bad, and the main victim is her little son Bren. David tracks down Eddie just as she's flying off to protect Bren. David--sure that the FBI is on his trail--follows Eddie up to Maine. Cheney is soon flying his own seaplane to Maine--to reclaim Bren, to win back Eddie. Cheney grabs Bren and tries to fly off with him into a midnight storm; David and Eddie pursue, rescue Bren, and (apparently) drown Cheney; Cheney returns for some hand-to-hand combat; David and Eddie rediscover love. This has strong scene-work that reaffirms Carroll's talent. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Nancy Crampton (Photo) (illustrator).

Natasha Trethewey (born April 26, 19…66) is an American poet who served as United States Poet Laureate from 2012 to 2014. She won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her 2006 collection Native Guard, and is a former Poet Laureate of Mississippi. Trethewey is the Board of Trustees Professor of English at Northwestern University. She previously served as the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of English and Creative Writing at Emory University, where she taught from 2001 to 2017. Trethewey was elected in 2019 both to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Academy of American Poets Chancellor David St. John said Trethewey "is one of our formal masters, a poet of exquisite delicacy and poise who is always unveiling the racial and historical inequities of our country and the ongoing personal expense of these injustices. Rarely has any poetic intersection of cultural and personal experience felt more inevitable, more painful, or profound." Trethewey was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2022. Structurally, her work combines free verse with more structured, traditional forms. Thematically, her work examines "memory and the racial legacy of America". Trethewey's first published collection, Domestic Work (2000), was the inaugural recipient of the Cave Canem prize for a first book by an African American poet. The stunning follow-up volume to her 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning Native Guard, by America's former Poet Laureate. Natasha Trethewey's poems are at once deeply personal and historical, exploring her own interracial and complicated roots, and utterly American, connecting them to ours. The daughter of a black mother and white father, a student of history and of the Deep South, she is inspired by everything from colonial paintings of mulattos and mestizos to the stories of people forgotten by history. Meditations on captivity, knowledge, and inheritance permeate Thrall, as she reflects on a series of small estrangements from her poet father and comes to an understanding of how, as father and daughter, they are part of the ongoing history of race in America. Thrall confirms not only that Natasha Trethewey is one of our most gifted and necessary poets but that she is also one of our most brilliant and fearless. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Trethewey made headlines and signaled a generational shift with her appointment this year as U.S. poet laureate. Already known for her 2007 Pulitzer Prize-winning Native Guard and for her articulate, deftly shaped, and sometimes research-driven poems about history and race, Trethewey in this fourth collection takes her familiar powers to non-U.S. turf, considering race, embodiment, guilt and liberation in paintings from Spain and Mexico. In one of the famous casta paintings illustrating Spanish colonial notions of race, a mulatto boy "is a palimpsest of paint, layers of color, history rendering him that precise shade of in-between." Lightly rhymed pentameters about Diego Velazquez's painting "Kitchen Maid" pay homage to the scrutinized character: "she is the mortar/ and the pestle and rest in the mortar, still angled/ in its posture of use"; the patient title poem considers Juan de Pareja, a painter who started life as Velazquez's slave. When Trethewey turns her attention back to contemporary America, she looks at her own family: her late African-American mother and her white father, his life "showing me// how one life is bound to another, that hardship/ endures." Trethewey's searching treatments of her own family, and of people in paintings, show strength and care, and a sharp sense of line. Nancy Crampton (author photograph) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First printing [stated]. 731, [3] p. Illustrations. Notes. Glossary of Names. Bibliography. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Inscribed by author on second fep. Richard Lee Rhodes (born July 4, 1937) is an American journalist, historian, and author of t…he Pulitzer Prize-winning The Making of the Atomic Bomb, and most recently, The Twilight of the Bombs. He has been awarded grants from the Ford Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation among others. He frequently gives lectures and talks on a broad range of audiences, including testifying before the U.S. Senate on nuclear energy. Rhodes was admitted to Yale University and received a Scholarship, which awarded him full tuition, room, board, and other expenses for four years. He published 23 books and many articles for national magazines. This book is published as part of an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Program, the Sloan Technology Series. Derived from a Kirkus review: It becomes clear that the battle between J. Robert Oppenheimer and Edward Teller over the development of the hydrogen bomb and the direction national policy would take in the 1950s is a significant focus. Their battle for the soul of the American public was Oppenheimer's tragic undoing, stripped him of his security clearances, and removed him from US policy-making. Teller's semi-Pyrrhic victory left him a virtual pariah in the world of physics. Rhodes brings to that story sound judgment, a sharp eye for intrinsically fascinating detail, and a nice way with words. His down-to-earth manner also leads Rhodes to nose out little-remarked nuggets, telling us, for example, that the famous atomic spy Klaus Fuchs and mathematician John von Neumann filed a patent together for the H-bomb in 1946. Rhodes manages to fit in a wealth of interesting detail. Nancy Crampton (Author photograph) (illustrator).
