Aberdeen University Press, 1984. IX,192p. Cloth. Small personal library mark and name on free endpaper. A.o.: E.M. CRAIK: Marriage in Ancient Greece (pp.6-30); A.S. GRATWICK: Free or Not So Free? Wives and Daughters in the Late Roman Republic (pp.30-54); J. HARRIES: ?Treasure in heaven?: Property and Inheritance Among Senators of Late Rome (pp.54-71). ?Mrs. Craik and her eight companions have been trained in different ways of thought. They look at different epochs. Yet certain themes recur. It seems to me that the reader cannot but become wiser as he compares these essays one with another and makes his own generalisations about the way in which our institutions have been affected by contract which are the basis of the family and of so much more.? (J. STEVEN WATSON in his Foreword, p. VI). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Mark Dennison's Charge is a novel written by Georgiana Marion Craik and first published in 1881. The book tells the story of Mark Dennison, a wealthy and successful businessman who is suddenly tasked with caring for his young niece and nephew after their parents die in a tragic accident. Despite his initial reluctance and lack of experience with children, Mark quickly becomes devoted to his new role as their guardian and sets out to provide them with the love and stability they need to overcome their grief and move forward. As Mark navigates the challenges of raising two young children on his own, he also finds himself drawn to a young woman named Edith, who becomes a close friend and confidante. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Edith is already engaged to another man, and Mark must decide whether to pursue his feelings for her or let her go.Throughout the novel, Craik explores themes of family, love, and duty, as well as the challenges and rewards of parenthood. Mark's journey from a successful businessman to a devoted guardian is a testament to the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
