Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. 1st Edition. Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press, 1998. Part of the Series: Civil War America, Gary W. Gallagher, editor. First edition, first printing. Hardbound. New in a new dust jacket. A tight, clean, unread copy, never opened. xxviii, 287 p. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. One of the Civil War America series. Union general John Pope was among the most controversial and misunderstood figures to hold major command during the Civil War. This volume collects, for the first time, the serialized wartime reminiscences of Union General John Pope, originally published between 1887 and 1891 in the National Tribune. Edited by Peter Cozzens and Robert I. Girardi, with a foreword by John Y. Simon, the memoirs provide detailed accounts of Pope's Civil War campaigns and vivid character sketches of figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Pope's writings offer a balanced and insightful perspective, contributing to Civil War literature.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First edition. First printing [stated]. xxviii, 287 p. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. Foreword by John Y. Simon. One of the Civil War America series. Union general John Pope was among the most controversial and misunderstood figures to hold major command during the Civil War. Before being called east in June 1862 to lead the Army of Virginia against General Robert E. Lee, he compiled an enviable record in Missouri and as commander of the Army of the Mississippi. After his ignominious defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run, he was sent to the frontier. Over the next twenty-four years Pope held important department commands on the western plains and was recognized as one of the army's leading authorities on Indian affairs, but he never again commanded troops in battle. In 1886, Pope was engaged by the National Tribune, a weekly newspaper published in Washington, D.C., to write a series of articles on his wartime experiences. Over the next five years, in twenty-nine installments, he wrote about the war as he had lived it. Collected here for the first time, Pope's "war reminiscences" join a select roster of memoirs written by Civil War army commanders. Good in very good dust jacket. Some minor page discoloration and some damp rippling on pages 67-70.

Zustand: Gut. Zustand: Gut | Seiten: 424 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | On a mountainside in sunny Tuscany, in October 1989, 96 people from 23 countries on five continents gathered to learn and teach about the problems of managing contemporary science. The diversity of economic and political systems represented in the group was matched by our occupations, which stretched from science policy practitioners, through research scientists and engineers, through academic observers of science and science policy. It was this diversity, along with the opportunities for infonnal discussion provided by long meals and remote location, that made the conference a special learning experience. Except at lecture time, it was impossible to distinguish the "students" at this event from the "teachers," and even the most senior members of the teaching staff went away with a sense that they had learned more from this group than from many a standard conference on science policy they had attended. The flavor of the conference experience cannot be captured adequately in a proceedings volume, and so we have not tried to create a historical record in this book. Instead, we have attempted to illustrate the core problems the panicipants at the conference shared, discussed, and debated, using both lectures delivered by the fonnal teaching staff and summaries of panel discussions, which extended to other panicipants and therefore increased the range of experiences reponed.
