It details the day-to-day burdens of statecraft, the stresses of managing a fractured parliament, and Shrewsbury's multiple attempts to resign from public life due to stress and failing health. The book catalogues confidential strategic letters between Shrewsbury and top Whig leaders. It exposes the shifting alliances, ongoing rivalries, and internal strategy sessions used by the Whigs to keep control of the government while actively pushing back against their Tory opposition. A large portion of the paperwork covers high-level defence and security matters. It features critical exchanges regarding: the ongoing Williamite War and regional stability. Secret intelligence regarding the Jacobite plots to restore the exiled King James II. British naval strategy in the Mediterranean and the coordination of the Allied forces fighting France. THE BOOK The book is handsomely bound in a later half leather binding with marbled paper covered boards with gilt decoration to the spine. The binding is in very good condition. some foxing to opening and closing few pages, book bears the bookplates of its former owner to front endpapers. Cadell and W. Davies, in the Strand'. The letter begins: 'Mr. Coxe wishes to keep back for a week or two sheet 3z, because he intends to divide the first Volume into two parts; and therefore desires Mr Hansard not to strike off that Sheet; and will trouble Mr Hansard to transfer the commencement of Ferdinand's reign from p 542. to the commencement of Sheet 4A.'
