Zustand: Good+. 1st Edition. viii+360+4 (pub.list, mostly phrenology); dated sig.of eminent historian of science R.M.Young fr.free endpaper above British Phrenological Society stamp, pencilled sig.of the ubiquitious Brighton-based phrenologist J.Millot Severn fr.free endpaper, who would have donated this to the Brit.Phren.Soc. from who it passed to Young on the Society's dissolution, a much earlier ink sig.on t.p. which is quite inoffensive, endpapers browning a little, sm.spot of red sealing wax rear free endpaper, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked, sl.gutter opening between pp.144/145, but this not at all serious; covers sound but boards inevitably a little grubby and worn, pale cloth sp.has some splitting along fr.joint and slightly to top back joint, label present but barely legible due to surface rubbing, top.sp.sl.chipped. A sound copy despite faults, with an interesting provenance.

In den WarenkorbBlind-stamped dark cloth. Zustand: Good-VG for age. 9th Ed. (1st-1826). xix++405+(4, inc.Combe list); prev.owner's 1971-dated sig. and gilt label top outer corner front pastedown, a few trivial brown flecks to half-title, t.p., and marginally, intermittently, through to p.xvi, then very occ. in margins elsewhere, two short marginal tears closed top half title and other closed bottom p.ix. front gutter thinly open but quite secure, otherwise clean, tight and unmarked; covers generally quite sound but widespread, though slight, surface rubbing and spine ends rubbed. This 9th edition is the last version of Combe's most successful work, a brief version of which first appeared in 1826, he died in the early stages of preparing this edition and the editors incorporated changes to Preface and Introductory Remarks, along with making other slight changes for the sake of consistency with these or as otherwise required. Best remembered as an advocate of Phrenology, this topic figures relatively little in this work. Apparently very scarce. Despite faults a quite acceptable copy in original binding and not of institutional provenance. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range. Size: 13 Cm x 19.5 Cm.
