Foreword for this edition by Arthur Kyle Davis, Jr. Very good. No jacket. John Harrington Cox (1863-1945) was a pioneer in the field of Amer…ican folk song scholarship. In 1925, he publication of "Folk-Songs of The South" was the first by an American editor to appear in print and was widely praised for its scholarship and became the model for future such collections. Despite its name, the collection is comprised mainly of songs from West Virginia. Each of the 1985 examples in the work contain a descriptive and historical preface and all the known verses. Also included is Lydia I. Hinkel's collection of tunes , each with musical notation and lyrics.
