Cover is faded / soiled near the top of the spine, where it lacked protection as a result of the damage to the jacket. Except for a small amount of fading towards the margins, the cover is otherwise clean and unfaded. Binding leans slightly but remains sound and tight. Previous owner's name in ink on front free end paper, otherwise pages are gently age toned but clean and unmarked.

Following his groundbreaking work in Exile's Return, Cowley convented a symposium of literary criticism on American Writers of the post-'Genteel' era. 'American literature, in the second decade of this century, turned a corner. It left the narrow lane in which it had been traveling and swung into a broader avenue whose end is not yet in sight. It turned its back on a dying tradition?the sterile gentility into which American letters had fallen, and set forth in search of new values. The quest is not completed?far from it?but enough happened in the twenty years covered by this survey to warrant a serious effort at appraisal. They were decades of intense vitality. . Theodore Dreiser, in an article by John Chamberlain, is naturally the first author to be considered. In the following chapters Robert Cantwell writes of Upton Sinclair and of Sinclair Lewis, Lionel Trilling of Willa Cather and of Eugene O'Neill, Bernard Smith of Van Wyck Brooks, and Newton Arvin of Carl Sandburg. Robert Morss Lovett discusses Sherwood Anderson, Louis Kronenberger writes on H. L. Mencken, Peter Monro Jack on the James Branch Cabell period, and Hildegarde Flanner on Robinson Jeffers and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
