Taking its title from a satirical 1947 Ad Reinhardt cartoon, the exhibition brought together artists who consciously explore notions of abstraction: "their paintings demand an intellectual appreciation, while sometimes, but not necessarily, also appealing to the emotions. Some works literally abstract from a concrete reality, perhaps taking their essence from another field of activity, such as architecture or photography; others achieve an abstraction, or generalised idea, with a relation to the physical world; others operate from an internal point of reference. The artists in this show employ a variety of models of painting; they demonstrate different influences, painting languages and systems of working. They are reflexive, aware of developments in their own field, often painting about painting itself, commenting on the past, yet engaged by new questions about the phenomenological and psychological in contemporary experience. A number of the artists in this exhibition use geometry or the grid, either loosely or disrupted for its dynamic on the canvas or perhaps to explore the idea of the rational in compositional systems. Gesture, if it appears, is deliberate and controlled. All are interested in process, techniques in the use of materials as well as mental calculation; often colour is key. Few, however, allow process to take over and, in fact, often offer the viewer evidence of the journey made: the decision-making, the conflict between doubt and certainty, the theories or philosophies researched and encompassed." Mosses are attractive experimental plants because they exhibit the traditional attributes of good model systems (Le. ease of growth & maintenance, fast generation time, and amenable genetics) with the added advantage of a haploid gametophyte that allowed developmental mutants to be recovered with relative ease. In addition, mosses with the ability to tolerate extreme environmental conditions offer realistic models for the analysis of environmental stress-tolerance; particularly when compared to tracheophytes such as Arabidopsis thaliana in which these important plant phenotypes are either not clearly expressed or entirely lacking. And, in one of the most exciting developments in Plant Biology, efficient homologous recombination occurs in the moss Physcomitrella patens. The ability to perform efficient homologous recombination (Le. gene knock-outs) in P. patens is at present unique amongst all plants and represents an extremely powerful technique for the functional analysis of many plant genes. Over the past 5 years, a world-wide community of moss researchers has evolved. A highly successful 'Moss' conference has been held annually (l998-Mumbai, India; 1999-Carbondale, IL, USA; 2000-Villars, Switzerland; 200l-0kazaki, Japan; 2002-Ambleside, UK; 2003-St. Louis, MO, USA) with 'Moss 2004' planned to be held in Frieburg Germany.
