Although collected between the two world wars, it reflects an Edwardian taste for lavishness and represents the fruits of the unrivalled buying opportunities enjoyed by collectors in what may now be seen as a time of plenty. When the collection was gifted by the Art Fund to The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham, in 2003, the Museum already housed one of the most important collections of fine and decorative art in the United Kingdom and had been 'designated' in 1997 by central government for its quality. The Museum was purpose-built in the 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes who collected most of their paintings, textiles, furniture, pottery and porcelain in Paris including French faïence and soft-paste porcelain. Additions to their own collection include the collections of John Bowes' cousin, Susan Davidson (mostly Oriental export porcelain) and Enid Goldblatt (mostly Continental porcelain). Lady Ludlow published a catalogue of her collection in 1932, but this has long been out of print, and also out of date, as she both added and disposed of items after its publication.
