Important article dans lequel Couper détaille sa "Nouvelle théorie chimique". Elle avait été présentée peu avant dans un note condensée de 4 pages, le 14 juin 1858 à l'Académie des sciences, puis Couper détailla sa "Nouvelle théorie chimique" en août 1858 dans notre article. Il y énonce les deux principes suivants : 1. La valence de l'atome de carbone 2. L'atome de carbone peut entrer en combinaison avec lui-même en conduisant aux différentes combinaisons organiques. Il utilise aussi pour la première fois des pointillés ou des traits entre les atomes dans ses formules ce qui préfigure l'apparence actuelle de celles-ci. C'est au début de l'année 1858 que Couper demande à Wurtz, dans le laboratoire duquel il travaille alors, de présenter devant l'Académie des sciences une note intitulée 'Sur une nouvelle théorie chimique'. Wurtz, n'étant pas membre de l'Académie, tarda à trouver quelqu'un pour le présenter. Entre-temps, l'article de Kekulé, portant essentiellement sur le même sujet, daté du 19 mai 1858, parut dans les Annalen de Liebig. Finalement ce fût J.B. An important paper in which Couper details his "New Chemical Theory." It had been presented shortly before in a condensed, four-page note to the Academy of Sciences on June 14, 1858, and then Couper elaborated on his "New Chemical Theory" in August 1858 in our paper. In it, he sets forth the following two principles: 1. The valence of the carbon atom 2. The carbon atom can combine with itself, leading to various organic compounds. He also uses, for the first time, dotted lines or dashes between atoms in his formulas, foreshadowing their current appearance. At the beginning of 1858, Couper asked Wurtz, in whose laboratory he was then working, to present a note entitled "On a New Chemical Theory" to the Academy of Sciences. Wurtz, not being a member of the Academy, was slow to find someone to present it. Meanwhile, Kekulé's article, essentially on the same subject, dated May 19, 1858, appeared in Liebig's Annalen. Finally, it was J.B. Dumas who read Couper's note to the Academy of Sciences on June 14.
