ii, 68pp, 14 bw illustrations on fold out plates 21x14, unbound Covers and title page missing, contents page missing substantial pieces only slightly impacting text, edges of plates rough, a couple of pencil marks. Damaged copy of Rumford's classic work. The pagination matches the description of the third edition, but without th…e title page and imprint it is difficult to be sure. Rumford (he became a Count of the Holy Roman Empire in 1791 in recognition of his work for the Prince-Elector of Bavaria) was a polymath, whose achievements ranged from furnaces to nutritious soup for the poor. Born in America, he was a Loyalist in the War of Independence, and ended up in London, then Paris and Munich. As well as solving the problems of inefficient fireplaces he helped to found the Royal Institute, and - apparently - invented thermal underwear. One of the great Enlightenment figures.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offprint from: Bibliotheque Britannique, Sciences et Arts. Vol. 5 [Geneva, 1797]. 8vo (199 x 127 mm). iv, 104 pp. One folding engraved plate. Printed on blue paper. Inscribed and signed by Rumford on title-page ("to the right honorable Lord Sheffield, from his most obedient servant Rum…ford"). Provenance: Lord Sheffield (dedication by Rumford on title-page); Walter Scott Thompson (his bookplate to front pastedown). Later cloth (extremities little rubbed). Internally only little age-toned, title page with glued residue of flyleaf paper at gutter margin (not affecting text), inscription slightly trimmed at top and fore-margin. ---- DSB XIII, p.351. FIRST EDITION of Rumford's essay on the propagation of heat in fluids. Rumford is best known for his contributions to the theory of heat. At the end of the 18th century the predominant theory of heat was the so-called caloric theory, according to which heat was a fluid substance that flowed into bodies when they were heated and flowed out of them as they cooled. The success of this theory in explaining then known phenomena is reflected in many terms, such as "heat flow" and "calorie," still used by physicists today. "In 1797 he published the description of a device for proving gunpowder, which was generally accepted as the standard method by both the British and the Bavarian armies. It was during his investigations of cannon that he was impressed by the large amount of heat generated in cannon barrels by the explosion of gunpowder even when no ball was being fired. He was thus led to accept the vibratory theory of heat, which he championed actively all his life. Thompson¿s most famous experiment in this area was his demonstration of the process of boring cannon with a dull drill, which he carried out in the arsenal at Munich. Because the heat generated in this process seemed limitless, he reasoned that a fluid caloric did not exist. Thompson carried out many other experiments to demonstrate the reasons for his disbelief in the caloric theory. He unsuccessfully attempted to determine whether heat had weight, which would be an attribute of a fluid; he weighted, at different temperatures, fluids that had markedly different specific heats and heats of fusion. He studied the anomalous expansion of fusion. He studied the anomalous expansion of water between 4°C and 0°C to show that the concept that thermal expansion is caused by fluid caloric taking up space was false. He never realized the connection between heat and energy, although he did carry on experiments to demonstrate spontaneous interdiffusion of different density liquids at constant temperature, and he postulated that fluids are in constant random motion." (DSB). Inscribed by Author(s).

Original blue wrappers, spine hand-lettered in ink (paper dust-soiled and spotted, paper over spine heavily rubbed and chipped towards spine ends, edg…es slightly frayed, corners dog-eared). Provenance: Benjamin Hyett Esq. (signature on front wrapper). A very good, completely unsophisticated copy. ---- Dibner Heralds of Science 151, Sparrow Milestones of Science 189, Norman 2073 - FIRST EDITION. Rumford discovered for the first time by experiment that heat is induced by friction, and he worked out a surprisingly accurate figure of coefficiency. This was the first blow to the current theory of heat as an 'igneous fluid' called 'caloric,' and foreshadowed the conclusions summed up in Tyndall's phrase 'heat as a mode of motion.' Also in this vol.: Herschel, William, On the Discovery of Four Additional Satellites of the Georgium Sidus, pp.47-79, 2 folding engraved plates. "Born in colonial Massachusetts, Thompson became a count and minister of war in Bavaria, later the founder of the Royal Institution in London and the Bavarian Academy in Munich. His major contribution was in the theory of heat. Observing the heat created in the boring of cannon, he measured the thermal capacities of the chips and boring bars. He then set up controlled experiments simulating the boring operation, using a Steel borer and brass cylinder, all placed in a wooden box holding a known volume of water. By observing the rise in temperature of the water, from cold to boiling; the heat produced could be read by this calorimeter. Since the amount of heat generated depended only on constant friction, the old concept of a body's 'calorie' was destroyed; a mechanical interpretation became valid. Heat became not matter, but motion" (Dibner). Also in this volume: Herschel, William, On the Discovery of Four Additional Satellites of the Georgium Sidus, pp. 47-79, 2 plates. - Visit our website to see more images.

With 6 leaves of woodcut illustrations in vol. 1 and an engraving on p. 3, and 6 leaves of w…oodcut illustrations in vol. 3, other woodcuts in the text, half-title in each volume. Contemporary calf, flat spines ruled in gilt and with black labels and black oval numbering labels. Top of spine of vol. 1 chipped, some foxing on endpapers, but a very nice set. FIRST EDITION of the complete 3-volume set, containing 15 essays; third edition of volume 1 (?The third edition?), first edition of volume 2, and of volume 3 despite ?A new edition? on the title-page. These three volumes contain 15 essays on an establishment for the poor in Bavaria, and on the principles for such establishments; of food, particularly for the poor; on chimney and kitchen fireplaces and the economy of fuel; on the propagation of heat in fluids and other substances; on friction as a source of heat; on the use of steam for transporting heat; and on the salubrity of warm bathing. Much space is devoted to domestic science: Thompson studied air currents in open fireplaces and introduced several elements of their design found in modern chimneys, thus increasing their efficiency. He studied domestic cooking stoves and utensils in great detail, inventing the enclosed kitchen range, the coffee percolator, and steam heating systems for houses and even large buildings. In a remarkably varied career Thompson received many honours in England, America, Germany, and elsewhere, and established prizes for scientific research in America and England. In London he founded the Royal Institution. The first volume of this complicated book was first published in parts in 1796; the text of the third volume was evidently published before the title-page, and the first three parts were available separately. See Parkinson, Breakthroughs, 1797 (in the essay ?On the propagation of heat in fluids? Thompson discovered the circulation of ocean currents; 1798 (the essay on friction as a source of heat showed that heat is a form of energy), and 1799. See also Sparrow, Milestones of Science, 189.
