On the 23rd June 1812 Napoleon Bonaparte's Grand Armee crossed the River Niemen into Russia in an attempt to defeat the Russian army and force Tsar Alexander into a Treaty confirming Napoleon's dominance over the whole of continental Europe. However, despite initial success which led to the French entering Moscow, the army had failed to resoundingly defeat the Russians and faced continual harassment from Russian skirmishers and the civilian resistance, decreasing supplies and lack of shelter and a staunch resistance from the Tsar to accede to Napoleon's demand for a truce or armistice.Facing a bitter Russian winter, an opponent with superior numbers and failing supplies the French were forced into ignominious retreat and only a fraction of the original force returned alive from Russia. The author of this account, de Segur, was a General of Brigade in the French army and took part in this campaign. He provides a detailed and compelling narrative of one of Napoleon's greatest defeats. This is the second volume of two and covers the period after the Battle of Borodino to the end of the campaign. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Dos a dos in English and in French, 32 pp. Illustrated throughout with photographic images, staged and domestic images of the couple as well as of their son . Very good or somewhat better, some light toned spots to the wrappers. A promotional piece for "The Midgets Palace"/ "La Palais Des Nians" , part exhibit and part hotel for a troupe of "little people" located in Montreal. It was established by Philippe Nicol (1881-1940), born with dwarfism who, in his early years, was a "sideshow freak" with the Barnum and Bailey Circus from the age of three, and his wife Rosa, also a dwarf. After establishing The Midgets Palace, the pair dubbed themselves "Count and Countess" and became known as the" King and Queen of Midgets". They opened "The Midgets Palace" at 961 Rue Rachel in Montreal 1926 as a "dime museum" such as were popular at the time. Admission would include one of these booklets. This particular copy includes on the inner covers, a memorial portrait of Philippe with the notation that he had died on May 26th, 1940, aged 58 years and 8 months.

Rebound during the nineteenth century in quarter cream cloth witha a title plate to spine and blue paper to remainder of boards. Bouards and spine are heavily worn and the title plate is distressed. Foxing to endpapers and page edges. Page edges are untrimmed and some pages remain uncut.
