Also translated into German, this overview of Indian religions, history, and culture reached a wide European audience. General Björnstjerna (1779-1847) was a writer on economics and history who also wrote The British Empire in the East in 1840. Born in Saxony, he joined the King's Guard in Sweden at the age of 14. He served in the Finnish Army's general staff as the head adjutant during the Finnish War, later becoming a major in the Västmanland Regiment. He was also a major figure in the Swedish revolution of 1809 and served as the Swedish Minister in London. Octavo (210 x 135 mm). Contemporary half sheep, marbled sides, flat spine lettered and ruled in gilt, edges sprinkled red. Spine and extremities rubbed, a little stripping to corners, short split to foot of front joint, inner hinges cracked but firm, a few leaves with paper flaws to margins, light foxing to blanks, contents otherwise clean. A very good copy.
