The…first is complete, the second contains the more relevant parts of Cotugno's monograph, from the Neapolitan version dated 1775. The present English translation by Eileen Mulligan follows Dr. Linda Ricciardi-Mitolo's selection. The facsimile copy of the Title Page of the text, some pages, key to illustrations and Cotugno's famous two Tables are from a copy of the Vienna edition dated 1774. The facsimile copy of the frontispiece portrait of Cotugno is from a copy of the "Opera Posthuma", both from the private library of one of the editors (S.I.). It is a pleasure for us to offer this first English translation of Cotugno's monograph to the participants of the XXXIV Workshop on Inner Ear Biology held in Apulia, 13th-16th September, 1997 and to the Members of the Italian Society of Audiology, which is one of the sponsors of this meeting." Demenico Cotugno (1736-1822) genoß als Professor für Anatomie an der Universität Neapel und königlicher Leibarzt großes Ansehen. Die hier vorliegende posthume…Ausgabe seiner Schriften bringt neben den gesammelten kleinen Beiträgen vor allem auch eine erweiterte Fassung seines ursprünglich 1764 erschienenes Hauptwerks "De Ischiade nervosa Commentarius", einer der wenigen Schriften, der Garrison-Morton gleich drei Einträge widmet (1382, 4204.2 und 4515) sowie seine Arbeit zur Anatomie des Innenohres "De aquaeductibus auris humanae internae" (1761, Garrison-Morton 1549): He "did make important contributions to the knowledge on the structure and function of the ear, including the discovery of the aural aqueducts. The naso-palatine nerve and the columes in the osseous spiral lamina are named after him." Seine "Abhandlung vom nervigen Hüftweh" (so der schöne Titel der deutschen Übersetzung von 1792) kommentieren die Heirs of Hippocrates "In this, perhaps his most important work, he differentiates arthritis from nervous sciatica, gives the first detailed description of cerebrospinal fluid, and shows that the congealed protein in the urine of a nephritic patient is a diagnostic sign" (1026). Bibliotheca Walleriana 2180. Außerdem enthalten die Bände noch "De sedibus variolarum Syntagma" (1771), "a lucid description of the anatomy and pathgology of smallpox pustules. It is regarded as one of the finest dermatological works of the eighteenth century" (Heirs 1027). Beide Bände mit Abklatsch eines entfernten Exlibris sowie neuerem Vorbesitzerstempel. Die Rücken berieben und das Porträt durch den Exlibris-Abklatsch fleckig, insgesamt handelt es sich jedoch um ein ordentliches, gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.

SCARCE FIRST WIEN EDITION OF A REPORT ON THE LOCALIZATION OF THE SMALLPOX VIRUS, WRITTEN BY DOMENICO COTUGNO Domenico Cotugno 's (1736-1822) investigative report on the loc…alization of variola pustules, the smallpox virus. Cotugno describes the history and pathology of smallpox as well as providing a comprehensive description of the virus and ways to prevent the disfiguration of the face. First published in 1769 in Venice, 29 years before Jenner's discovery, he concludes that they are only external and do not affect internal organs. the internal mucous membranes however, were also affected when exposed to the air, as he was able to observe in a patient's prolapsed intestine and haemorrhoids. Cotugno's contribution to the study of the disease came at the cusp of Jenner's research and success with the smallpox vaccine, making this work an important part of the early struggle to eradicate the disease from the modern world and it "is regarded as one of the finest dermatological works of the eighteenth century." Hair of Hippocrates Cotugno was professor of surgery and anatomy in Naples and he is best known for his studies, especially in the field of neurology. "In the early 19th century, his reputation as a physician was such that, as the saying went, ''no one in Naples could die without a passport from Cotugno''.; Extending his interests to preventive medicine and public health, Cotugno became a pioneer in epidemiology.
