Costello, S.C., T.D., in Dail Eireann, November 24th, 1948, on the Republic of Ireland Bill, 1948, which repeals the External Relations Act, 1936, and declares that the description of the State shall be "The Republic of Ireland." John Aloysius Costello (1891-1976), a successful barrister, was one of the main legal advisors to the government of the Irish Free State after independence. He was Attorney General of Ireland from 1926 to 1932 and Taoiseach from 1948 to 1951 and 1954 to 1957. In the General Election of 1948 Costello was a surprise compromise choice for Taoiseach. Not having been involved in the Civil War or having held a ministerial position, he was more acceptable to the other parties in the coalition government. It had been a campaign promise of Clann na Poblachta to repeal the External Relations Act of 1936. In September 1948, Costello on an official visit to Canada when asked by a reporter about the possibility of Ireland leaving the British Commonwealth declared publicly for the first time that the Irish Government was going to repeal that act.
