Zustand: New. » J. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding slightly bumped and light-margined, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: Since the last decade of the fifteenth century Latín was invaluable to the ruling circles of the Spanish monarchy, who employed it to frame the image of the Empire during the period of expansión and conquest in Europe and the New World. The unification of Aragón and Castile under the so-called Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, and the discovery of America in 1492 re-inforced the interest of the Crown in building an official historiography, which, through the use of Latin as a tool of communication aimed at an international readership, forged a sense of political unity. As Brian Tate has shown, at the peak of Spanish domination in Europe and the New World, a very concerted effort to spread knowledge of the glories of Spain beyond the limits of the Iberian Peninsula took place under the patronage of the Spanish Crown. After 1550 a series of works by Latin historians of Iberian origin was published abroad doubtless contributing to the dissemination of the countrys past and con-temporary political achievements among Europeans. Latin was, indeed, also used as a vehicle for the affirmation of Spanish cultural identity. Several scholars writing in Latin were, for example, engaged in mapping out the literary history of Spain for their European counterparts in order to prove her cultural excellence and contribution to human learning. At the zenith of Spanish power Latin therefore helped the political and cultural élite of early-modern Spain ratify the Imperial project of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The papers in this volume study the early influence of Petrarch in France and in the Crown of Aragon. They focus, in particular, on Bernat Metge (c. 1348-1413), a prominent member of the Aragonese Royal Chancery, who produced a Catalan adaptation of Petrarch's Griseldis (from Seniles, XVII, 3-4) around 1388, making a Latin work of Petrarch available for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, Metge's fragmentary Apology(1395 ) and his Dream (1399) reveal familiarity with Petrarch'sSecretum, Familiares and possibly De remediis. His fine imitation of Petrarchan models and his interest in classical literature put Metge on a par with contemporaneous writers elsewhere in Europe. This book aims to introduce a wider readership to an aspect of the dissemination of Petrarch's Latin writings which has so far received little attention and also to shed light on the cultural relations between France and the Crown of Aragon in the late fourteenth- and early fifteenth centuries.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Latin Political Propaganda offers the first comprehensive study of the central role played by the Latin language to celebrate or undermine political power during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1715). Waged as much on the printed page as on the battlefield, this worldwide conflict gave rise to an astonishing variety of Latin writing across the Continent - in verse or in prose - on both the pro-Habsburg and pro-Bourbon sides. Ranging from official documents, epic, satirical and panegyric poetry to defamatory pamphlets, letters, historiographical and juridical tracts, medals and ephemeral architecture, this vast textual corpus has gone almost unnoticed.Alejandro Coroleu provides close examination of the literary devices of these texts and shows how imitation of models and figures from classical antiquity was at the heart of the authors' highly refined verse and prose technique. He also pays attention to the historical and social context in which the texts emerged, and connects the Latin political writing produced at the time with more popular forms of propagandistic discourse (literary or visual) which found its expression in the vernacular. This book also reveals how the learned language continued to function - even after the hostilities had come to an end in July 1715 - as an instrument of political discourse and propaganda on both sides of the dynastic feud up until the death of Emperor Charles VI in October 1740.
