Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Getting By in Hard Times describes the experiences of daily life for predominantly white, working class women and men during the period of 'economic restructuring' begun in the 1980s. Luxton and Corman show how the shift from a pattern where women were full-time housewives and men were income earners, to one where women are increasingly income earners as well, is altering the experience of everyday life Based on a case study conducted from 1980 to 1996, of households where one person was employed at Stelco's manufacturing plant in Hamilton, Ontario, the book examines how working class families make a living by combining paid employment and unpaid domestic labour. During this period of government cutbacks the loss of secure employment for men (as the steel plant cut its labour force by about two-thirds), combined with women's increasing participation in the labour force, resulted in lower standards of living, reduced income, and the imposition of more unpaid work on family households. Getting By in Hard Times examines how growing insecurities undermined class politics while increasing gender, racial, and ethnic tensions. By focusing on the daily coping strategies of white working class women and men, the book shows the human face of changing gender, race, and class politics in Canada.…

Mimeo snipes once affixed to the versos of the film stills (detached but present). Director Corman at his noir-est. The Black Widows, a teenage girl gang led by Helen (Spain, an early favorite of Russ Meyer), suspect Barbara (Kenney) of killing one of their members. Barbara is the sometimes girlfriend of the leader of rival gang, and the two gangs prepare for warfare. As the gangs prepare, the stories of their private lives unfold, and every aspect of family dysfunction is represented, showcasing an example of the mid-century "juvenile delinquency" scare. 8 x 10 inches, advert photos slightly larger. Very Good plus overall, with a corner crease to one film still photo, and minor creasing to others. Grant US. Lyons US. Martin 382. Selby US. Spicer US.…

Draft script for the 1957 film. Copy belonging to actor Dick Miller, who had a sizable role in the film, with his name to the title page, and his manuscript pencil and ink annotations throughout. The finished film runs a little over an hour, so the script, at 127 pages, was cut down substantially in the filming and editing process, leaving a remarkable amount of content for study. An alienated, wealthy coed at an all-girls boarding school inflicts increasing cruelties on the other students, until her manipulation goes too far. An early role for Miller, who appeared in 14 films directed by legendary independent filmmaker Roger Corman between 1955 and 1961, and would continue to work with Corman throughout his career. Brown titled wrappers. Title page present, undated, with credits for screenwriter Ed Waters. 128 leaves, with last page of text numbered 127. Mimeograph duplication, rectos only. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound internally with three silver brads.…
