Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The Fifth Son of the Shoemaker' is a whimsical and enchanting novel that blends urban realism with the timeless quality of a modern fairy tale. Set in early 20th-century New York City, the story follows the fortunes of Pyotr, the youngest son of a Russian immigrant shoemaker who has brought…his craft and his family to the bustling streets of America. As Pyotr navigates the vibrant, often harsh landscape of the city, Donald Corley weaves a narrative rich with folklore, romance, and the pursuit of artistic beauty. The work stands out for its unique atmosphere, capturing the immigrant experience through a lens of wonder and imagination. As Pyotr seeks his own path away from his father's bench, he encounters a world filled with aspiration and the lingering magic of his cultural heritage. 'The Fifth Son of the Shoemaker' explores themes of legacy, the immigrant dream, and the persistence of the spirit in the face of modernity. Corley's lyrical prose invites readers into a world where the mundane and the fantastic coexist, making it a compelling piece of early American fiction for those who appreciate literary fantasy and evocative, character-driven storytelling. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. dj. First Edition. Octavo (19cm). Turquoise cloth, lettered in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 282pp. A few faint spots of mottling to cloth at spine, else a fine, tight copy in the original pictorial dustwrapper, unclipped and just lightly rubbed at extremities, Near Fine. Corley's second published book and only nov…el, a loosely-gathered series of anecdotes concerning a family of Russian emigre shoemakers in New York's Lower East Side. The jacket art is by Corley himself, who was perhaps better-known as an illustrator than an author, though he did publish several Bleiler-listed collections of fantastic short stories. The current title is also in Bleiler, though the fantasy elements are incidental. An uncommonly nice copy. Not in Hanna. BLEILER (Checklist, 1972) p.85.
