In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Cordiner's highly uncommon second book, an appealing, informative, and breezy narrative describing his life in the East - the Cape, Bombay, Madras and Colombo. James Cordiner (1775-1836) was a Scottish Episcopal clergyman, "in 1797, while still a divinity student, he was appointed to superintend the Military Male Orphan Asylum at Madras, for Eurasian sons of British soldiers" (ODNB). In Ceylon, he was responsible for the formation of three schools in Colombo and also served as chaplain to the 80th (Trincomalee, 1797-98) and 51st regiments (Colombo, 1798-1804). The present account begins with his departure for India and Ceylon in 1797 on the Anna of Bombay, with descriptions of life in the Cape, "many of the ladies are genteel, well-bred, and even beautiful. Some of their female slaves are likewise extremely handsome. they dress, in all respects, like their mistresses, who treat them, in private, as companions" (p. 46). He then proceeds to Bombay, Madras and Colombo. The journey out from the Cape does not pass without incident, however, as one crew member appears to have been fired with revolutionary fervour: "two of the English sailors accused John Miller, boatswain, of having proposed to kill the captain and officers, and carry the ship into the Isle of France [Mauritius]"; Miller is put in irons until Bombay where he is tried but acquitted "for want of sufficient evidence". From here to Bombay Cordiner peppers his narrative with some colourful impressions, such as "Lascars at Dinner" (Chapter II), "they eat with so much niceness that they never dropped a grain of rice" and commenting, "lascars are excellent sailors in their own climate, and often climb to the top-mast-head upon a single rope, holding by their toes, as well as their fingers; but a transition to the cold latitudes is hard upon them, and very severe weather renders them entirely useless". He concludes Chapter VI with a brief account of the storming of Seringapatam (1799) and the death of Tipu Sultan. Chapters seven to ten cover life in Ceylon before Cordiner returns to Aberdeen via Madras and Saint Helena. Of Madras he notes that "all classes of European society here live sumptuously, and many individuals expend from two to ten thousand pounds each annually, in maintaining their households. The economy of their tables is trusted entirely to native servants, who load them with dishes of solid meat, estimating the goodness of the dinner by the quantity which they crowd upon the board; and in most houses there is but a scanty supply of vegetables. Even rice and curry, the staple food of the country, are often omitted, probably because they are common; but they are the best and moist wholesome nourishment which India affords. They form all the repasts of the native, who drink nothing after their meals stronger than water: and those who wish to enjoy good health in a tropical climate will do well to follow their example" (p. 110). Library Hub cites four copies only in British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow); WorldCat adds a further eleven worldwide. Highly uncommon on the market, with only one copy on auctions records (Sotheby's, 2014). Mendelssohn p.629; not in Riddick. Octavo (220 x 135 mm). Stipple engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by William Bond after Archibald Birnie. Original drab grey boards rebacked in the mid-19th century with olivine morocco-grain cloth, gilt lettered direct, untrimmed. Book label of Library of the Chambers Institution, Peebles, to front pastedown and stamps to frontispiece and title page. Spine ends chipped, light wear to extremities, spine sunned, joints starting but firm, corners softened, some foxing and toning to the first 4 leaves; a very good copy retaining the half-title and terminal advertisement leaf.…
