Facsimile reprint of a scarce booklet, originally printed and published by S.H.Cowell, Buttermarket, Ipswich, 1893. Witherpole House was once a mansion situated on the Christchurch estate, Ipswich, Suffolk. 25cms x 17cms. Pp.35 (printed on one side of pages only), with ten full page illustrations and descriptive letterpress by the author (sadly all faintly copied with print loss). White stiff card covers with "letterbox" viewing opening to front which has been repaired with clear tape. Good.** "John Shewell Corder (1856 in Westoe, South Tyneside 19 July 1922 in Ipswich) was an English architect, artist and antiquarian.Corder has been credited with over 100 commissions. These include: Boscombe House, 65 Anglesea Road, Ipswich, (Grade II listed building); Hacheston Lodge, The Street, Hacheston; Extra classrooms for Woodbridge School in Burkitt Road, Woodbridge, Suffolk; Work on the Black Boy public house, Sudbury; and Tranmer House, 1910. Home of Edith Pretty during the 1938-39 excavation of the Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon burial mounds." (wiki).

Folio [375 x 275 mm.] pp. title, preface, list of subscribers, 35, 10 plates. Original printed wrappers, gutta percha perished, so loose within the wrappers, faint old stain affecting the images. Rare, only 6 copies located.

Small losses to spine ends, extremities of boards slightly rubbed. Previous owner's small label to front pastedown. Very minor foxing. A very decent copy. (an7).

Large Paper Copy. Folio [430 x 320 mm.] pp. title, preface, list of subscribers, 35, 10 plates on tinted background. Original cloth backed printed boards, gutta percha perished otherwise Very Good in slightly worn cloth backed boards. Rare, only 6 copies located. From printer's records which we have seen, there were 250 copies of this large Paper edition in boards, rather than the wrappers of the standard edition, each covered with a printed outer wrapper tucked neatly over the boards. The parchment is brittle and has not survived on the only other copy which we have had.

Probably the printer's copy, label reading "A publication sponsored jointly by John Shewell Corder and S.H. Cowell. Here are some particulars of works production costs etc with work tickets written out by Mr. W.B. Hanson." With additional material including: i) annotated list of subscribers with residence location of subscribers in pencil, ii) itemised sheet of material costings for the publication, showing the papers used, total £40 7s iii) 2 notes of quantities ie. 200 copies at size 11 x 13¾, as this copy, and 250 copies at size 12¾ x 17 [large paper copies] iv) 17 pieces, correspondence with subscribers and the printer regarding sales etc. Rare, only 6 copies located. Christchurch Mansion was built in the mid 16th Century and by the late 19th Century was showing the inevitable signs of deterioration; Corder wished to record details of the house before it was lost. A syndicate bought the estate, selling much of the land for development, and one of their members, Felix Cobbold from a prominent Suffolk family, presented the house to the town of Ipswich, the corporation subsequently bought the park surrounding the mansion.
