Among other reflections, the annotator remarks on p. 160, 'The excision of over-erotic passages has led here and there to solecism, e.g. the change of 'hon' to 'heyn' in IV,11, calls for the omission of 'kai' before 'ouden'.' We suspect the owner's name 'R. A. Clarke' appears to be in another name, leaving this first reader unfortunatlely anonymous, noting only 'From Class Rev. August 1910 after the final notes. 'Despite its perennial popularity and the admiration of no less an authority than Goethe, Daphnis and Chloe was largely ignored by classical scholars, being considered trivial and/or pornographic, until the 1960s, when the ancient novel began to be viewed as a worthwhile object of study.' This was the time of the famous "Kitchen Debate" between Khruschev and Nixon ; the previous owner has written "July 1959" on the title page. Nixon's itinerary for that month included his arrival on July 23, his visit to the Chaikovsky St. Market on July 24th, followed by Nixon' s tour or Russia, which began on July 27th; on this trip, Robert Webster of the Rand Corporation suddenly chose to defect to the Soviet Union on July 11, and Lee Harvey Oswald attempts to contact members of the Exhibition while in Russia ; with a few notes by the owner of the book detailing events on the trip, particularly to the State Department Store during the first week of July; a very interesting memento of a significant moment at the depth of the Cold War ; one image has been removed and trimmed, but laid back in ; FAIR. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 5 volume set in early, full leather, binding. Brown calf with gold borders, raised cords, title labels in red and black, marbled endpapers, marbled fore-edges. A nice handsome set, but with some fading to the gold decorations on the spine, and a chip to the top quarter inch of volume. Volume 3 lacks its rear cover, but all boards are firmly attached to all other volumes. This appears to be a late 19th century binding on the 1827 set. About 400 pages per volume. Text blocks crips and square and tight. Engraved frontispieces in each volume. Volumes 2, 3, 4 and 5 have the name of an early owner "Harold Phelps Stokes" rubberstamped discreetly on the bottom of the front endpaper. Stokes was the son of Anson Stokes, a wealthy NY Banker, and grew up next door to JP Morgan on Madison Ave. He went to Yale and then joined the Hoover administration before going to work for the NY Times, where he was an editorial writer for many year. Illustrated lithographic cover with photo-montage and text in black and yellow. A French right-wing collaborationist and anti-Communist publication issued during the Nazi-occupation. This massive publication was quite lavishly produced for a piece of propaganda, and is profusely illustrated throughout with hundreds of striking images (some full-page) including b/w and cyan tinted photogravure, as well as drawings, photo collage, photo-montage, reproductions of original documents and artwork and political caricatures. Also included are a few charts and statistical tables. The text is divided into more than 20 different sections (or articles) written by a large number of prominent French collaborationist and right-wing political figures, journalists and writers of the period. These include Maurice-Ivan Sicard (1910-2000, also the director/ editor), Maurice Laporte (1901-1987), Émile Bougère (1903-1964), Lt. Colonel Paul Gamory-Dubourdeau (1889-1963), Jacques Ploncard d'Assac (1910-2005), Armand Bernardini (1895-1972), artist and cartoonist Ralph Soupault (1904-1962), Cardinal Alfred Baudrillart (1859-1942) and others. Many contributors to this publication were involved in the infamous right-wing and anti-Semitic periodical Le Cahier Jaune (1941-1943), published by André Chaumet. The content throughout include tirades against the Soviets, International Communism, Jews, and many other entities. Numerous specific figures of the Soviet State are singled for direct attack. There are constant praises for the Nazis, Fascism, and the Franco regime, as well as discussions of the Russian Revolution and the Spanish Civil War, among other related topics. Notable sections include a detailed analysis of prominent Jewish communists and Jewish Soviet figures (including photo portraits), and an analysis of so-called "Bolshevik Art", which in a similar way to the Nazi concept of "Degenerate art", labels works of the modern art and the 20th century avant-garde, as being instruments of International Communism, and the plots of nefarious Jewish art dealers to steal patrons' money. Shown are photogravure reporductions of works by Picasso, Leger and others (no credits). The text of the title refers to the infamous Katyn Massacre (1940) in which more than 20,000 members of the Polish military and intelligentsia where executed by the soviet NKVD, under the orders of Stalin. The dead were then buried in mass graves in the Katyn forest, and later uncovered by the Nazis in 1943. News of the discovery was effectively used by the Germans as anti-Soviet propaganda in publications such as this, warning against the dangers of Bolshevism. The final section of this publication addresses the massacre specifically, and includes images of the mass graves. The back cover is a striking photographic image showing crosses in silhouette accompanied by a quote from French poet and essayist Charles Peguy. The interior front cover contains a full-page visual diagram showing the organization of the International Communist party inside France. Text throughout in French. Wrappers with some light rubbing, creasing and chipping to extremities. Small residue from tape along the spine. Wrappers overall quite clean and vibrant. Patch, the eldest son of a smuggler, had been forced to mortgage his Exeter farm and subsequently fled to London in order to dodge his creditors. While there, he met Blight, a ship-breaker, who proposed that he become a partner in the business. Patch agreed, but lacked the money to pay for his share and killed Blight instead. In passing sentence, the judge told Patch: "you began this practice in fraud, continued it in ingratitude, and completed it by shedding the blood of your friend and benefactor." This item appears to have been extracted from a bound volume owned by Edward Mangin [1772-1852], an Irish writer, translator and cleric. The lengthy note to the front free endpaper concerns the case of Elizabeth Fenning, a domestic servant accused of murdering her employer whose trial and execution became a national cause celebre. Many believed Fenning innocent, among them Charles Dickens. Mangin remarks that Fenning was "the victim of the combined wickedness & obscenity of her prosecutors; [.] the brutality and filthy national prejudices of a rabble jury; and the infamous scribbling of a time-serving, prostitute villain, the editor of the Sunday Observer newspaper." The notes are likely based on a copy of The Important Results of an Elaborate Investigation into the Mysterious Case of Eliza Fenning (1815) and reference an article written b. London, 1806. A very good copy. $1,500. * Only American edition, based on the first London edition, 1807. Highmore, a British legal writer and solicitor, was secretary to the London Lying-In Hospital. One of the very first books on the topic, this treatise examines precedents concerning the insane and their treatment under the law. It discusses the meaning of "ideot," non compos mentis and lunacy, as well as the custody of lunatics, commission of the insane to hospitals or asylums, habeas corpus, disability and recovery of the insane, regulations of asylums and criminal cases involving the insane. Our American edition has a 27-page Appendix with valuable information on the insanity plea and the American criminal justice system at the time. It replaces that of the 1807 English edition which relates only to English courts. Dr. Edward Gillespie [1872-1949], a later owner of this copy, worked as a psychiatrist at the Binghamton State Hospital in New York from 1896 until his retirement in 1937. Formerly the New York State Inebriate Asylum, Binghamton was the first American institution designed to treat alcoholism as a mental disorder. By outlining the differences between the previously undivided court, Kitchin, along with Coke, helped lay the foundations of modern legal theory.
