Softcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. A "signed Association copy". This book has been signed and inscribed to its previous owner by Michael Tshehla Phahlane. Phahlane, the man who gave Soweto its name back in 1963, was a popular black South African journalist known for his jazz-writing. He was nicknamed "The Indestructible" because of his legendary reputation for having survived a number of near-death experiences including being beaten up, stabbed, pushed in front of moving buses, stabbed with blunt instruments, scalded with boiling water and having his skull cracked with a brick. Phahlane was soon nicknamed "Mike Mazurki", after the American professional wrestler who had a penchant for taking acting roles for characters that were typically "tough". Phahlane passed away in 2018 at the age of 97. His inscription on the title page reads: "Best wishes to you Bruce! (Swingcerely yours) Indestructiblecerely yours, Mike Mazurki Phahlane. December 4 '86." Also tipped into the back is a typewritten letter to Bruce (who's signature is on the title page) from Phahlane. It reads: "Greetings Bruce!!! I bought this on your behalf, because you want to knoq about black showbiz-jazz. Bruce you will reimburse me the R25, I paid on your behalf. Indestructiblecerely yours, Mike Mazurki Phahlane." The wraps of the book itself are shelf rubbed and edge worn, but remain strong and intact. Internally, there are no other inscriptions, and the pages within are neat, legible and complete. The binding is secure. JK. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. Signed.
