Includes an important essay by Cathryn M. Cootner, Curator-in-Charge of the Textiles Department at the Fine Arts Museums, which introduces the subject of oriental flatweaving to the general reader. In this essay, which is accompanied by numerous line drawings, she explains her hypothesis that the origins of certain kilim designs can be traced back to neolithic basketry. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with numerous color plates and in-text line drawings and b/w photographic reproductions.
