Verelst.Coote was given the command of the British East India Company's forces in Bengal, and settled a serious dispute between the Nawab Mir Qasim and a powerful subordinate.This letter discusses these events, and is focussed upon trade in the region.Rebound in cloth backed paper covered boards.ESTC T37866Coote was known by his sepoy troops as Coote Bahadur, meaning Coote the Brave. 84pp. Disbound. Coote, 1762-1823, Irish-born British soldier, Governor of Jamaica, General & MP. As a result of the proceedings reported here, he was stripped of his rank & honours, for 'conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman'. In November 1815, Coote paid boys at Christ's Hospital School to be flogged and in turn to flog him. Charged with indecent conduct, he was brought before the Lord Mayor of London, where the case was dismissed; Coote had donated £1,000 to the school. Hearing of the matter, the Duke Of York, Commander-in-Chief of the Army, set up the Inquiry which decided Coote was 'eccentric' but not mad.
