In den WarenkorbThe six items in fair condition, with light signs of age and wear. The four letters all with Morley's expansive signature ('Sheridan Morley'). The first letter (9 March 1970) begins: 'It seems a long time (indeed it is) since I used to buy books from your shop in St Martin's Court; but I thought I'd try to re-establish contact with you because I have started - in a very small way - to sell theatre and film books myself in the basement of James and Pauline Scudamore's secondhand bookshop in the Earl's Court Road.' In a long letter (2pp., 8vo) on 16 May he writes that he would be 'delighted to take over as much of your remaining stock as I can afford, and you want to dispose of', but 'with a son of 2 and another baby imminent' he can 'only afford to make the bookselling a part-time career; most of my work is done as an interviewer for BBC television, and the arrangement I have with the Scudamores is an ideal one for me in that I have one room of their shop to call my own, but when I am not there (ie about 3 days of the week) they "caretake" it for me and people buying books pay for them at their desk upstairs'. He continues with an explanation of the arrangements. Morley ends the letter with a promise to 'pass on yours to Pauline, James and my godfather Sewell'. In the third letter (15 May) he explains that he has been 'out of London filming for the BBC', but that he would be interested in the items Duncan offers, but will have difficulty raising the £80 cost ('not that I question your valuation, merely that we are under-capitalised'). He offers to visit Duncan in Southampton to discuss the matter further. The telegram (28 May) attempts to change the date of the visit. The last letter (1 June) regards payment through a money order. The carbon copy of Duncan's letter (2pp., 4to) is dated 14 March 1970, is signed, and discusses Morley's proposal in detail.

In den WarenkorbEdward Knobloch's play 'My Lady's Dress' ('in which', as one newspaper wrote at the time, 'the heroine's dream takes her to the foreign [and London] scenes surrounding the manufacture of a costly gown') premiered at the Royalty Theatre in London in 1914 and was revived several times through the 1920s. Although neither of these photographs is among the five Foulsham & Banfield portraits of Cooper in the National Portrait Gallery collection, the second one (Cooper and Eadie embracing) is present among the seven unattributed scenes from the 1914 production in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection ('Given to the Gabrielle Enthoven Collection by L.E. Berman'). Both of the present items are black and white gelatin silver prints. Dimensions are approximate. ONE: Cooper seated on a chair in front of a window and beside a table, hands clasped in her lap, looking mournfully at the viewer, in dotted smock worn over plaid dress, with lace collar and crocheted Welsh-style shawl. HEIGHT: 30.5 cm. WIDTH: 21 cm. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight wear and chipping at edges, and one very small closed tear at head, beside '5/-' which appears to be part of the print. Written in pencil on reverse: 'Miss Cooper as Annette / Act I. Sc 3.' Also label with ink note: 'My Lady's Dress / Royalty / Feb 27 1914' and the stamp of Foulsham & Banfield, 49 New Bond Street. TWO: The Victoria and Albert description reads as follows: 'Photographic print of Act III, Scene 3, of a production of My Lady's Dress at the Royalty Theatre, 23rd April 1914. The photograph features a full length image of Miss Cooper as Anne and Mr Eadie as John they are standing together, embracing, and are gazing towards one another.' He wears a dressing gown and she is in a rather splendid Pre-Raphaelite-style dress. Height: 26.5 cm. Width: 20.5 cm. Adhering to the reverse are the remains of a grey paper mount, and no details are given. In good condition, lightly aged. See Image.

Unbound. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. A small collection of photographs and Christmas cards Inscribed by Gladys Cooper to Marian Seldes. Both Inscribed photographs measure 3½" x 5½", three cards measure 5¼" x 4" closed, and one is a sheet of cardstock with a photo of Cooper's house laid down, the cardstock measuring 7" x 5". An occasional bit of toning, one portrait with a light crease and a bit of loss to the glossy coating in the margins only, about fine. A nice collection of photos and photographically illustrated Christmas Cards (one featuring a photograph of Cooper's painted portrait by Sir William Orpen) from actress Gladys Cooper to actress Marian Seldes. Most feature brief holiday sentiments, but one states "Thank you dear Marian + Julian [Claman] for having us to your goodly party!" (Signed recto), and Cooper writes in a 1963 Christmas card: "A FAIR? LADY? in her CHALK? GARDEN." (Cooper starred in the US premiere of Edith Bagnold's *The Chalk Garden*). A nice association between two important actresses: Gladys Cooper's career spanned seven decades, and Seldes received a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010. Signed.
