A tight and attractive first edition of this study of the influence of our more intellectual American presidents -- and, apparently, of the man who in 1952 some thought might fall into this group with that presidential election: Adlai E. Stevenson II, subject of the tenth and final chapter ("The Egghead Campaign of 1952: The Mantle Falls on Adlai E. Stevenson"). "Egghead" had been a derogatory term for an out-of-touch intellectual, and Republicans tried to popularize and use the term again Stevenson, though despite Eisenhower's being follicularly challenged he was never accused of being intellectual. The witty Stevenson, to his credit, supposedly rephrased the Marxist "Workers of the world" slogan and came out with, "Eggheads of the world arise, you have nothing to lose but your yolks." In any case, this special copy came from the library of Governor Stevenson himself and bears his rubberstamped ownership signature on the front flyleaf.
