Bound in an elegant full calf with gilt detailing and tooled dentelles. Written by Arnol…d James Cooley, an author and scientist who specialised in the production of medicines and cosmetics. This fascinating work depicts ancient and modern usage of the toilet and cosmetics, with a review of the different ideas surrounding beauty, as well as information on social, hygienic and medical stances. The author also includes instructions and cautions regarding the use of perfumes, cosmetics and other toilet articles. With information surrounding practices in the Middle Ages, Greece, Italy, China, Russia, and many other places. With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. Bound in full calf with gilt detailing. Externally, excellent, with light rubbing to the front joint and spine head. Spine is a little bumped to the head. A small crack to the tail of the front joint. A touch of fading to the spine. Bookplate to the front paste down.
