Recent quarter calf over marbled boards, blind fillets, lettering piece and gilt date to spine, endpapers renewed. Light fading to spine. Light toning to interior, negligible light soiling to a few leaves, light foxing to last fifteen or so leaves, early ownership signature (of solicitor and legal writer George Dudgeon) to head of title page, early underlining and marks to margins on a few leaves. A nice copy. $650. * First edition. One of the most important nineteenth-century treatises on the law of mortgage, it was considered the "standard work" by Holdsworth. It went through nine editions, the last in 1927. George Dudgeon, a former owner of our first edition, is best known as the author of The Duties of Overseers of the Poor, and Assistant Overseers (1st ed. 1838), one of the many manuals for overseers that proliferated after the New Poor Law of 1834.
