Octavo; original brown cloth. One of 500 copies published of this early and influential Cook bibliography, by the doyen of Cook collecting, Sir Maurice Holmes. One of two standard bibliographical references for the voyages of Captain Cook, it is discursive and more attuned to the collector than Beddie's bibliography, which by comparison is encyclopaedic. This is the second and best version, revised and greatly expanded from Holmes' original 1936 essay (which, notes Holmes, 'contained one shocking howler. and half a dozen more venial errors'). It was put together by a significant collector: Holmes's Cook collection is today in the UCLA library. Like Holmes's earlier and less authoritative "Introduction to the Bibliography of Captain Cook" of 1936 it was published by the English bookseller Francis Edwards, at that time well known for its specialisation in books of voyages and travels. . A tight, very good example, some spotting to the spine strip and minor wear at the spine extremities. Occasional light foxing to the text as is usual. One of the scarcest and most sought after New Jersey historical volume. Part I describes the physical and geological description of Cape May County, its geological age and formation. Part II is "Economical Geology" (analyses of soils, marsh mud, forests, agriculture, fish and fish by-products, building material substances (particularly brick), salt. The second major portion of the work consists of "Catalogues of Zoological And Botanical Productions of the County of Cape May" that includes lists of the larger wild animals of the county (opossums, bears, raccoons, skunk, fox, squirrels, rabbits, deer, etc.); birds native to the county (including bald eagles, geese, various hawks, owls, swallows, fly-catchers, and smaller birds.); fishes (black fish, mackerel, dories, catfish, mudfish, pike, flounder, herring, turbot, sole, eels, shark); plants, marine algae. There is an engraving of a Venus Mercenaria with descriptive paragraphs of that fossil and the Buccinum Obsoletum. The final section is "Sketch of the Early History of the County Of Cape May".

Library of Congress duplicate stamp, bottom of the front board and corners bumped, very slight loss at the spine ends, small tears and faint stain in the margins of the map with a minor archival repair on the verso, overall very good or better. Inscribed by the author George H. Cook to Spencer F. Baird, of the Smithsonian who is acknowledged on p.11 for his survey of fishes in the area: "Prof. Spencer F. Baird, with the respects of Geo. H. Cook." Baird's small ownership stamp on the titlepage. Baird's comprehensive geological and natural history survey of the County, with Beesley's informative and relatively early historical sketch including early mentions of sea bathing at the County resorts. A noteworthy association copy, the map by Egbert L. Viele is highly prized in its own right.

Collection of 16 vernacular photographs taken on the Marblehead, Massachusetts set of the 1917 film. Photographs are archivally mounted on the rectos and versos of eight black photograph album leaves with photo-corners, and nearly all bear contemporary annotations on the leaves in white ink, identifying people, locations, and photographers. Collection includes four photographs of star Mary Pickford in costume, and four show actress Mary Moore, sister-in-law of Pickford, and sister of co-star Matt Moore (Pickford was married to Mary and Matt's brother Owen Moore at the time). One of the photographs of Mary Moore includes her four children. Mary was not credited in the film, but may have served as an extra. Seven of the photographs capture the film's sets and/or the Marblehead coastline, including one photograph with the annotation "a Burgess-Dunne in Flight," which shows a Dunne D.8, a tailless swept wing biplane, flying above the set, with several cast and crew members seen below in silhouette. Seven of the photographs are credited to a Mr. Fearing, a photographer we have been unable to identify. One photograph is credited to a Mr. Litchman, with an additional copyright statement printed in the bottom margin. Fred Litchman was a prolific turn-of-the-century photographer who worked frequently in the Marblehead area. According to contemporary news reports, on November 12, 1916, during filming off the coast of Marblehead, the schooner containing Pickford, director Maurice Tourneur, the cameraman, and several cast members, took on water and sunk, requiring Tourneur to rescue Pickford. Set in Scotland, and shot on location at Marblehead, Massachusetts and Fort Lee, New Jersey. Photographs: 14) 5.5 x 3 inches and 2) 2.5 x 3.75 inches, mounted on 8.25 x 5.5 inch photograph leaves. Near Fine overall.
