8vo, pp. [vi], '30' (misnumbered for 50), 140, 108, [52] table; a very good copy in contemporary French calf, spine gilt; nineteenth-century bookplate of the Bibliothèque de Mouchy. First edition of the principal work of Armand de Bourbon, prince de Conti (1629-66), a dire series of warnings about the evils of the stage, with an impressive collection of ancient authorities to support his condemnation - from early church Councils and fathers such as Tertullian and Cyprian, to figures as recent as Carlo Borromeo. Conti, brother of le grand Condé (1621-86), had studied under the Jesuits at the Collège de Clermont, where he was a younger contemporary of Molière. He befriended the playwright, offered him the post of his secretary and is reputed to have introduced him to the court; but in this book he turned against the stage and charged it with atheism. The privilege and approbation in this work are both dated mid-December 1666, so it is not surprising that the title page is of the following year. The privilege was shared between Pierre Promé and Louis Billaine, and copies are found with either bookseller's name in the imprint; some are also reported (e.g. at the BN) dated 1666, but all of the 8vo editions have the same pagination and are clearly from the same printing. Promé also published a 12mo edition in 1667, with 224pp., but that must certainly be later than this, the true first edition.

Dans la nuit du 5 au 6 janvier 1649, la Reine mère, le jeune Roi, les princes et le cardinal quittent Paris pour se réfugier à Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Le départ de la famille royale crée dans Paris une situation insurrectionnelle. Le Parlement se trouve à la tête du mouvement et l?arrivée des troupes rappelées des frontières par Mazarin le contraint à rechercher des appuis. Les princes et les grands seigneurs se proposent, poussés par le désir de rétablir leur puissance affaiblie très sensiblement par Richelieu sous le règne de Louis XIII. Le 11 janvier 1649, le prince de Conti, est déclaré « généralissime des armées du roi, sous les ordres et l?autorité du Parlement ». Pendant deux mois Condé assiège Paris, avec 8 000 hommes. Mais les Frondeurs sont trop divisés pour triompher. Des pourparlers sont engagés entre tous les partis et le 11 mars 1649 la paix de Rueil accorde un pardon général. La cour se réinstalle à Paris. Edition parue quelques mois après l'originale et la mort de l'auteur. Frère du prince de Conti, l'auteur participa à la Fronde des princes et fut emprisonné. Son "Testament" figure ici avec page de titre distincte. Théorie de la responsabilité des "Grands" et de l'exercice du pouvoir : mesuré, dirigé vers le bien public, et dont les titulaires ne sont que des dépositaires redevables devant Dieu. 2 vignettes de titre : Armes des Conti et une vue de Paris. Petite gal. de vers en marge de 10 feuillets. Les 5 feuillets préliminaires d'avis au lecteur, approbations et privilèges, manquent.

Dealing with the duties and obligations of a 'gouverneur de province' which makes this little work a true vade-mecum. - Running titles ocassionaly touched by the binder's knife, a few leaves repaired in the outer upper corner nowhere touching text, some scribbling to title-page.

Cologne, Nicolas Schouten, 1689, petit in 12 de (60)-263 pp., rel. d'ép. plein veau brun, dos à nerfs orné de fers dorés, pièce de titre brun sombre, encadrements de double-filets sur les plats avec armes dorés aux centres, bel ex. Éd. originale. Armand de Bourbon, prince de Conti (1629-1666), était le frère du "Grand Condé", et fut l'un des chefs de la Fronde. Ayant mené une vie tumultueuse, alternant d'importantes campagnes militaires comme chef de guerre, avec une vie de libertinage. Il fut un temps le protecteur de Molière, et s'intéressa aux arts. Il mena par la suite une vie de pénitence empreinte de jansénisme, et se consacra à l'étude et au mysticisme jusqu'à sa mort en 1666. Il écrivit ces lettres en réponse aux neuf lettres sur la grace que lui avait adressées en 1664, le père jésuite Etienne de Champs, dont il fut l'élève.
