Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Very rare book. Non-fiction book based on the Russian  experience of Victor Tissot (1844-1917). He was a Swiss journalist and non-fiction writer. As a result of his travels to the Russian Empire, he published the memoirs, "Russian and Russians". His impressions were varied and sincere. He tried to embrace the wide range of Russian images.  In 1881 George D. Cox translated into English the most politically painful part: the Siberian exile of political prisoners, known as katorga. The Japanese publication was intended as a series of exile stories, but only the first part was published. Text in Japanese. Original hardcover paperboard with brown cloth spine. The corner of the wrapper board shows rubbing and chipping. Stains on the flypaper. Taxation (or censorship) stamp of Niigata prefecture on the title page. Small sticker on the last flypaper. Occasional stains on the content. Otherwise, very good to near fine condition. 6 double page lithographed b&w plates. 18,5x12,4. 244 p.

Straordinario esemplare, il n. 41 della serie di testa su carta grande Japon in sole 50 copie, ben completo della suite delle tavole ma con in aggiunta 17 tavole originali di François-Constant Mès, di cui tre matite e le restanti colorate ad acquarello (una nei toni del grigio, sei nei toni seppia, sette a colori). Preziosa legatura art nouveau del maestro George Canape. Si tratta in assoluto del secondo volume illustrato di un'opera di Flaubert, pubblicato due anni dopo la «Madame Bovary» di Quantin; com'è noto, l'autore era particolarmente restio ad accostare immagini alle proprie opere, tanto che nel contratto stipulato con i fratelli Lévy la quarta condizione imposta dall'autore recita: «Elle ne pourra faire aucune édition illustrée des deux romans de Madame Bovary et de Salammbô, sous quelque forme et sous quelque prétexte que ce soit»: l'editore insisteva per illustrare «Salammbô», ma il 12 giugno 1862 Flaubert, chiudendo definitivamente la questione, scrisse piccato all'amico Ernest Duplan (intermediario tra la casa editrice e l'autore): «Jamais, moi vivant, on ne m'illustrera, parce que la plus belle description littéraire est dévorée par le plus piètre dessin». Si dovette quindi attendere la morte di Flaubert per vedere le prime edizioni illustrate. Tiratura di soli 50 esemplari numerati su carta Giappone (non 100, come indicato da Talvart & Place) per la tiratura di testa di questa bella edizione illustrata. (agrafes un peu rouillées) Très rare numéro de la revue d'avant-garde liégeoise rédigée par George Linze. La revue existait de 1920 à 1940. Linze était un défenseur du Futurisme en Belgique.
