He examines Constable's career and writes about his marriage and the tragic death of his wife in 1828, an event which had a profound effect on his painting. Publisher's boards, pictorial dustjacket. Very fine. London, Tate Gallery, 1981. Oblong 4to. 208 pp. Illustrated with reproductions in colour and black & white. Richly illustrated scholarly catalogue of 44 works by Constable (including "Brightwell Church and Village" (1815), acquired while the catalogue was in the press), 5 doubtfully ascribed to Constable, and 4 formerly ascribed to him. Also describes 2 works by his son Lionel Bicknell Constable. - - - "The Tate Gallery houses the second largest collection of Constable's paintings in Britain, including a number of his most famous compositions: Flatford Mill', 'Chain Pier, Brighton', 'Hadleigh Castle', 'The GIebe Farm', 'The Valley Farm' and others. In this, the first detailed catalogue of the collection, special attention has been paid to relating the Tate works to the artist's other treatments of the same subjects, many of which are also illustrated in the entries. The volume therefore acts as a guide to whole areas of Constable's art and not only to the Tate Gallery collection. Works formerly attributed to Constable are also catalogued in full, as are two items recently re-attributed to his son Lionel. All the principal subjects are reproduced in full-page colour and there are 130 black and white illustrations in the text. Leslie Parris is Deputy Keeper of the British Collection at the Tate Gallery and was one of the organisers of the Constable bicentenary exhibition held at the Gallery in 1976.".

Zustand: Good. [23] leaves of text and 20 colour engravings each with tissue guard. (4to) 32.5x24 cm (12¾ x 9½") period three-quarter blue morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt. Edges worn, front hinge open; paper a bit toned but overall internally near fine.Henry Vizetelly, Printer and engraver, Gough Square, Fleet Street"Plates engraved by Louis Marvy; after Sir Augustus Wall Callcott, J.M.W. Turner, J. Holland, Francis Danby, Thomas Creswick, William Collins, Richard Redgrave, Frederick Richard Lee, George Cattermole, William James Mu?ller, James Duffield Harding, Peter Nasmyth, Richard Wilson, Edward William Cooke, John Constable, Peter De Wint, David Cox, Thomas Gainsborough, David Roberts, and Clarkson Stanfield. Each plate is followed by a short critique by Thackeray. Thackeray was an old friend of Marvy, a French artist, who took refuge in London after the chaos of 1848. Theodore Taylor's 1864 biography of Thackeray mentions the history of the book: "A fine and skillful landscape painter himself, M. Marvy, while here, as a means of earning a living, made a series of engravings after the works of our English landscape painters. The publishers, however, would not undertake the work without a series of letter-press notices of each picture from Thackeray; and the latter accordingly added some criticisms which are interesting as developing his theory of this kind of art" (p.32). An interesting and quite scarce Thackeray item, very rarely found colored.Abbey, Life in England, no 207 : "The majority of the copies issued were uncoloured.".

The painter collaborated closely with the engraver David Lucas to create prints that would illustrate Constable's didactic intention?to illustrate the "chiaroscuro of nature."
