Some cracking to gutters with exposed netting. Binding loose. Minor pen inscriptions to endpapers. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front. Some additional heavy marks and staining.

Conner (1907-1991), the author of "Shake Hands With the Devil" and numerous other works of fiction, here tells his own story. His upbringing during the regime of the Black and Tans and during the Civil War in Ireland was difficult as the son of an RIC police officer, and Conner also suffered from depression and homelessness during the period before his success as an author.

Whatever sensationalism creeps in is due to the fact that the years of the 'trouble' were sensational enough to be stamped till death on the brains of every Irish man and woman who had the misfortune to live through them."
