Paperback. Folio. Self-cover. 4pp. Good only. Age toned and somewhat soiled, with a couple of centerfold edge tears. Overall quite respectable looking, though, with no edge chips. Decent full issue of this Confederate newspaper from the capital, dated several months prior to the Confederate government's evacuation in early April and the subsequent burning and occupation by Union troops. Typical late war news. Some wear issues, but easily legible and quite "handleable" -- very uncommon in any condition. Southern newspapers were generally printed on inferior quality paper, hence usually exhibit more age toning than their Northern counterparts.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. Rebound in gray cloth - an attractive institutional-type binding. Gold lettering on the spine. The letters LC embossed neatly on the title page. A few pencil notation on the copyright page. 379 pages + 73 page appendix. Binding is good and tight and crisp. Text block good and tight. Pages slightly toned from age, but overall very good. The Appendix of the Secret Session is where the state states "[the people of Virginia] do further declare that said constitution of the United States of America is no longer binding on any of the citizens of this state." It goes on to establish a Virginia Army and Navy and outline the laws of the state government. By April of 1861, the 7 southernmost states had already seceded from the Union. It was not until Fort Sumpter in April that Virginia officially seceded -- this publication is the official enactment and publication of that secession, printed that same year. No Binding. Zustand: Good. (James A. Seddon, Secretary of War and S. Cooper, Adjutant and Inspector General.) COMMUNICATION OF SECRETARY OF WAR. War Department, C. S. A., Richmond, Dec. 3, 1864. 4pp. House of Representatives, Dec. 7, 1864. - Laid on the table and ordered to be printed. [By the Chair.] [Transmitted with] MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT. Dec. 6, 1864. Single leaf, 2p., bears the oval "Rebel Archives" stamp (so faint as to be illegible); flattened creasings across lower half, rather toned and fragile with minute slender chips at bottom corner, a good copy. Parrish & Willingham 2294. Relates to the appointments under an act approved June 14, 1864, providing for establishment and payment of claims for a certain description of property taken or informally impressed for the use of the army. The requested list (personal names, state districts of those who have accepted appointments) runs a rather sparse page and a half; Seddon observes that "from the inadequacy of the compensation allowed, great difficulty has been experienced in obtaining suitable agents, and many of those to whom appointments were tendered have declined." Very short rolls covering Texas (2), South and North Carolina (2, 4), Tennessee (1), and slightly longer lists for four other states. Please email with questions or to request photos. This Confederate Imprint is one of more than 100 recently acquired, most with 'Rebel Archives' stamp on the cover, indicating that these were the actual copies seized by the Union Army at the end of the Civil War. A remarkable collection.
