First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To: H. H. S. Morant from the author - David Comyn." Below his inscription, Comyn has written five lines of original verse reflecting on the meaning of friendship. The recipient, like the author a veteran of the Mahdist War, is mentioned on page 24. Formerly an officer in the Black Watch, Comyn (1876-1917) joined the Egyptian Army and saw action throughout the war. His friend, Hubert Horatio Shirley Morant DSO (1870-1946), was gazetted to the Durham Light Infantry in 1889 at the rank of second lieutenant, mentioned by Kitchener in despatches in December 1898, and promoted to captain soon after. Both men served in Britain's Sudanese administration, the author as the acting governor of Halfa province and Morant in the intelligence directorate. Comyn's poetry reads, "I'd take his part if he were wrong; / I'd fight his battles to the end; / I'd listen if he'd sing a song; / and never count his tales too long, / Because - he is my friend [these four words underlined]."
