In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Original gilt-illustrated navy cloth with pictorial endpapers 24x32cm. (142)pp with colour frontis painting of Washington's HQ at Valley Forge, b/w photos and blue drawings throughout, and double-page route map. Very good with some marks to the covers and interiors, and a couple of closed tears. Laid in is slightly later Korean War era press clipping with photos of celebratory scenes of Valley Forge's return to San Diego (Independent Record, Helena, Montana, 1950, Vol VIII - No. 14, p1). Rare, with 7 locations recorded on Worldcat, all in the US (OCLC 31185003, 993049307). Valley Forge became Flagship of Fast Carrier Task Force 38 and Carrier Division Five just prior to departure. It was captained by Richard Waynick Ruble under the flag of Rear Admira Harold M. Martin. Leaving San Diego on 9 October 1947, the cruise took in Pearl Harbour (for almost 3 months of training operations), Sydney (for exercises with the Royal Australian Navy), Hong Kong, Tsingtao, Singapore, Trincomalee, the Aramco refinery at Ras Tanura (a goodwill gesture from the US Government, manning the rail for Emir Saud, with Prince's banquet laid on in Dammam), Suez (the longest ship at that time to navigate the Canal, with exercises in the Mediterranean), Gibraltar, Portsmouth (with two 72 hour leaves granted in war-damaged London), Bergen (through treacherous fjords in limited visibility), New York, and Panama, returning to San Diego on 11 June 1948. Among other Congratulatory Messages, the Secretary of the Navy praises the Valley Forge in achieving its goals: "The Valley Forge did not make this cruise around the world to seize bases in foreign territory, but to build trust, hope and confidence in the minds of those who love freedom".

In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Fair. B/w chart 104x72cm. Neatly folded but fair only, with wear along some folds, closed tears, and annotation. First published on 27 Feb 1931, with small corrections up to 1964. The main map, natural scale 1/750,000, presents the Yemen / Oman coast from Ras al Kalb to Jabal Nus beyond Marbat, with numerous settlements and geographical features named, among them Qishn, Ras Fartak, Salalah and the Dhufar Plain. Two inset maps show Bandar Risut 1/12,100 (features include an ancient burial ground), and Qishn Bay 1/60,500. The annotation is interesting, drawing in the PDR Yemen / Oman border, a little to the east of which is a rough pencil sketch of what appears to be a mosque or tomb, and directly below which is drawn a vessel off the coast at Hauf, perhaps marking the point from which this building was observed. A number of coastal settlements have been added in pencil or ink.

Editio princeps of the original Greek text, published with an annotated Latin translation by Nicolas Rigault (Rigaltius 1577-1654), a distinguished French classical scholar, who succeeded Casabon as Royal librarian in Paris. Onosander (Onesandros), a pedantic Greek philosopher of the first century A.D., was the chief authority for the military writings of several Byzantine emperors. His work in 42 chapters, entitled 'The General' explains the broad principles of command, the formation of an army, the preparation for battle, and other aspects of warfare from an ethical standpoint. 'The earliest military treatise wherein so much stress is laid upon the commander's duties, the morale of the troops, the ethical side of warfare' (Sarton). The text became very popular during the Renaissance and was translated into Latin (1494), German (1532), French and Italian (1546), and English (1563). The English translation (from Cotta's Italian version by Peter Whitehorne - see Cockle 14) was one of the earliest books on the subject published in Elizabethan England. An attractive, crisp copy with only occasional light toning. Adams O-190; Hoffmann III,7; Jähns 90-94, 451; NUC lists 1 copy only (Amherst); Sarton I, 255.

Das von der "Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force" herausgegegebene Handbuch, ist in seiner revidierten Form vom 15. Februar 1945 trotz seines "restricted"-Vermerks auf dem Deckel "published for the information and guidance of all concerned" (Impressum). Hinzugefügt wurde ein Kapitel "Measures for Protection of Allied Forces in their Relations with the Civil Population in Occupied Germany" (S. 45-53).
